    2nd Round Flyer?

I'm shooting a Rim-X with a Bartlein barrel. I broke in the barrel, cleaned out the carbon ring, and got back out to the range this weekend. With Eley Target and Wolf ammo, I was getting second round flyers from a cold barrel. The first round would hit, second round immediately after would be almost always high right, and then the rest on target. This happened probably almost every five round group.

Any ideas what could cause this?

Seems weird, I normally get a first round flier, especially on a clean barrel. It would hit low quite a bit, the rest seemed to be fine after that. I use a CZ 457 Varmint with a bull barrel, so temperature doesn't seem to impact it as much.

With my RAR I did notice a tendency that the rifle liked to have very little pressure on it (even after I cleared the stock form touching the barrel).

Do you swap ammo between the 5 round groups, or do you stick with one type for a few groups? How long between you fire the groups?

I have noticed a slight shift if I switch ammo for the first shot or 2, not so much with CCI SV and Wolf Match Extra - but others. I usually will do a few groups with one type before switching. I find it interesting that it would be fine for the first and then shift on the second shot. I normally do 2-3 throwaway shots between different ammo types to settle things down.

Don't clean the barrel after your range trip. Then take it out for your next range trip and see if it still has a 2nd round flyer. I'll bet with a fouled barrel you won't.

I switched after the Eley Target to Lapua Center X, but wind had picked up considerably so I can't say for sure. I did 10 groups of 5 rounds each for both, as well as with Wolf Match. It seemed to do it at random, but the most with the Eley.

Oddly, I had the groups open up, even with the Center X ammo, which was shot last. I shot a total of 160 rounds, but the last was the Center X and the wind was picking up. I was actually planning to give the carbon ring another scrub, it's present even after the 160 rounds.

Perhaps clean the barrel, then run 5 or so fouling shots before shooting groups. Run 2 fouling shots between ammo and then 1-2 to see if there is POI shift for the new ammo before shooting groups.
Wind really impacts groups at 100yds with 22lr.

For me a second or 3rd flier in a group is usually me shifting something or not paying attention to wind changes. Non match ammo typically has a flier every 10 rds or so. But that should be a lot less with match ammo.

I assume you keep your rifle and eyes in place between shots in a group.

Does it do the same thing when someone else is shooting it? Is the scope parallax perfect for the distance your shooting?
