    10/22 Problem

not sure if it's a FTF or what it's called... the rifle is a brand new ruger 10/22 ... the fist time I took it out... I would load the mag, insert cycle the bolt and click! no fire.. extract the round and noptice the pin is hitting right at the edge of the round. it was doing this around 50-60% of the time.

put a new barrel on it, and my buddy polished the action hoping it would be a bit smoother, but same problem. I'm waiting for a my new stock to get here and I'm gonna install the new exact edge extractor and auto bolt release.. and see if that helps... If not...what can the problem be?

I'm using federal 550 rounds bulk packs.

    thanks for any help.

First try different ammo, new extractor and bolt release won't help it go "BANG". Second, try upgrading your firing pin. $.02
    WOOHAA!!! It's ON!!

Sounds like the firing pin is riding too high.
There are staking marks on the top of the bolt that hold the firing pin down.
Perhaps these are not deep enough?
Swap bolt assemblies from a buddy's gun and see if the problem goes away.
If a new gun, you can send it to Ruger for repair.
Or, if you are local, I can take a look at it.

ran some CCI standard velocity and it worked better, but the problem still occured here and there.

is the firing pin adjustable? I doubt I can ship it to ruger since I've already replaced the barrel and modified the stock. I'll be taking it apart as soon as the new stock gets here, and I'll try to get some pics.

          Agree with Oji.

Firing pin has too much vertical play.

                2 ways:
                1. Hit the stake marks again with a chisel to deepen the dents that hold the front of the firing pin down.
                2. Some shooters drill a cross-wise hole and add a roll pin near the staked area to hold the front of the firing pin down.

                But, do this first:
It could also be a bunch of built up gunk accumulated under the firing pin.
Remove firing pin and clean out the groove it runs in.
