Are gun locks required for rifles?

I know I could probably search and find out, but for the sake of time maybe someone wants to fill me in? Thanks in advance!

Yes, for any firearms you purchase you have to buy a lock from the store or provide the model of the safe you own. Before I had a safe I just checked the website to see which safe models are approved and I would just tell my ffl some name from the list.

      Cool. Thank you.

Any idea how picky Turner's is regarding the lock used? I know handguns technically require specific locks on specific guns so I assume it's the same for rifles. Will any lock generally do or should I prepare myself for a bigger pain in the arse?

... Except, because the BATFE can't seem to get its act together, the CA Safe Affidavit is not acceptable for handguns; have to have a lock or other non-safe handgun safety device, following CA rules on type.

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!

In addition to having a lock to purchase a handgun; the lock has to be one of the following: the manufacture's lock, an approved CA lock purchased within 30 days with receipt or buy the lock from the FFL to PPT a handgun.

I went through the entire exercise on my recent PPT of my G30.

But what if it's for a rifle?

I believe the "approved CA" lock has to be purchased within the same time period for transferring a rifle or sign the affidavit of having safe for long guns.

I have a safe and signed the affidavit when transferring my Aero Precision AR10 Type stripped lower.

Yes if you just sign the affadavit with your safe mfg and model you can leave with your long gun.

Well, I don't have a safe and would prefer not to sign an affidavit saying I do when I don't. I know it's very unlikely to come and bite me in the *** later, but considering that I'm looking to go the DA path in the near future, I prefer not to make any misrepresentations.

i DROS'ed a gun at turners and they never gave me a chance to tell them i already had a safe. they charged me for a lock and never gave me one. I would say that makes me think the are picky or maybe just adamant that you use one of their locks.

what about locks you get from private sales? since those don't have receipts how do you show that you got it within 30 days?

*Get* a receipt. If the seller is throwing in a lock with the gun, have the seller write a a separate receipt for it.

                        Or,
                        • buy an approved lock before you pick up the gun (don't open it),
                        • bring it with you at the end of the 10 days,
                        • pick up the gun,
                        • take it home,
                        • then return the lock.

I was actually planning on doing this since I have an extra lock at home. I just didn't know if they'll give me crap for having the wrong lock for the gun or something.

As a rule I avoid turners unless I get drawn for a weapon at a CDA dinner then I have no choice.Their weekly ads are a fraud they seldom have the merchandize they advertise so I go elsewhere like Bass Pro & Sportsmans Warehouse too bad they picked a dead area like victorville to open a store I was hoping they'd stay in business so I'd have a store to shop in.
