Need a recommendation - I might be looking for a unicorn.

I am looking for something that's proving harder to find than I thought. I want a 22lr bolt action rifle, with a 16" barrel, wood stock and a threaded barrel.

Ruger American - no stock on the target models (only ones with wood stock and threaded) for the last year. This is what I really wanted because they use the 10/22 magazines.

CZ 457 Scout - fits the bill, but it's kid sized.

Savage MKII - there is an FV-SR variant that has the AT-One stock, but its zombie green and nearly $450 which is seems alot.

Are there any other bolt action 22lr rifles under $500 that fit that bill.

    TIA

I looked at the Savage at the local Wally. It's not the FV-SR, its VSR, so a non-fluted barrel. That, plus the AT-One stock made it really heavy. Passed on it.

Well - you could always buy a used .22 bolt gun at a gun show for a couple hundred, and have a gunsmith bob and thread the barrel.

I was just at a local gun show yesterday, and saw several old .22 bolt guns in the $125 to $200 range. All had wood stocks, and I'll bet you could get it bobbed, threaded, and re-blued and still be in line with your $500 budget.
Always looking for vintage Winchester and Marlin lever action rifles. Looking to sell? Know of one for sale? Drop me a line!

Savage 70203 B22 FVSR Bolt 22 Long Rifle (LR) 16.25 10+1 Synthetic Black Stk Black The Savage B22FSR rifle is suppressor ready and features a black synthetic stock,

This rifle, and a Boyd's laminate or walnut stock, should put you right around $500.

Or, as above, just buy any ol' knock-around rifle from a gun show and get the muzzle threaded.

Any reason not to consider a 10/22 though? You mentioned mag compatibility already, and there are tons of custom barrels on the market that'll hit your 16" threaded requirement.

Savage MARK II FV-SR is the correct answer for a budget 22. VERY precise shooter with good ammo. I like subsonic ammo for my best results.

The stock is stupid easy to make better also. Caveman easy.

          msrp is <300 so...

I used to have an FV-SR. In hindsight, maybe shouldn't have sold it.

This may be an option too. Thanks for the suggestion.

Was thinking about getting the barrel threaded
Maybe just get a larger stock for the Scout?

If it's so horrible, why did you buy it? Savage makes lot of other models if iron sights are a real need.

The stock on my rifle doesn't effect that stout barrel one bit and the lop is within industry standard for non-youth cut.

As I said before, the stock is stupid easy to make stiffer and also make balanced by strategically adding weights inside the open areas of the stock.

Yes it's a cheap stock, but it sure doesn't shoot cheap. That barrel/trigger combo is dead nuts accurate. Little rifle that checks all the boxes. Silencer ready.

                    IMO of course.

ESH...Bear in mind while th Savage MKII/V and B22/V models (V being heavy Varmint barrels) are very, very accurate, none of them come with iron sights. So a decent optic should be recognized in OP's budget/requirements.

And, it's possible to catch a sale at Boyd's to acquire a good wood/laminate stock. Trying to bring that tupperware plastic stock up to accuarcy standards is a lo$t cause...

I have two FV models, and caught a Boyd's sale on MKII stocks at $14 each! Only prob was they were HOT PINK in color. But Krylon rattle cans of Satin Black and wrinkle finish black transformed them into better models.

There were other mods to those Boyd's stocks that allowed the basic V Savage model to excell, but that's another follow on thread.

                      TLDR
With a little work, the Savage FVSR platform is an excellent starting point.

I bought a little Savage bolt action with a little tactical stock. Nothing crazy. It had a threaded barrel. It was a fine little shooter. I got it here on the marketplace for dirt cheap. I'll look for a photo of it. (I sold it and bought a Bergara tactical .22LR rifle. I love it.)

Was looking at the Ruger American Rimfire 8305. Has a tupperware stock, but has all the other features I want. Boyds is $230ish. so close.

I have a CZ 452 Varmint that's my target gun, so looking for something lighter

CZ 457 ProVarmint checks all your boxes except price, as does the 457 AT-One.

I own a Varmint MTR and its exceptional.
