Issues with very old Remy 572 Fieldmaster

Very old gun that must be from 50's-60's as there's no serial number anywhere on it.

First issue was it didn't want to chamber long rifle. Mostly got that cleared up by clearing all the fouling from chamber. It's fired a LOT of shorts during it's lifetime. It ran okay for awhile.

Latest issue is it now chambers a round and hammer falls with click but no striking the rear surface of round and no bang bang. Chamber is closed all the way as I have to toggle release on left side to pump it and eject rounds. I'm thinking broken firing pin.

After some searching I found a replacement firing pin and it's shipped and on its way.

Anything else to look for as I REALLY like this gun? Any other parts I should have on hand or replace when I take apart bolt to replace firing pin?

Springs can and will go weak, especially firing pin/striker springs.

My 572 had a broken firing pin and it would not discharge a round. A new firing pin fixed the problem. My 572 also does not have a serial number.

I have heard that firing a lot of shorts and longs in a long rifle chamber will cause fouling just in front of the cartridge, which prevents a long rifle cartridge from chambering. You may want to inspect the chamber closer and insure all the fouling is out and consider polishing the chamber.

I agree with 'ol shooter, you may want to change the hammer spring. If your rifle has no serial number that means it was made at least before 1969 so new spring may be in order.

BTW, I really enjoy my Remingtion 572.

I bought a 572 a couple years ago and it would not load and fire lr rounds. I watched a couple YouTube vids and noticed the rifle in the video had a silver looking device with a spring for a lifter behind the main mechanism so I ordered them from numerich
When they got here discovered they were not for my era 572
So I put this project aside for awhile. A month later I striped the gun down and started a thorough cleaning and discovered I could not fully insert a long rifle bullit
So after 2 hours of scrubbing the chamber with q-tips soaked in #9 I could get a lr to seat properly.
I reassembled the gun and suddenly feed fire and eject perfectly
So I've got a lifter set for a different era gun.lol
Beware of guns that are popular to shoot 22 shorts from ,hahaha

Waaaay back in the dark ages, 22 shorts were cheaper to buy than 22 long rifle ammo, so often older guns were fired with a lot of shorts, creating the problems you're having...

He said his dad would buy one box of 22 shorts and after school hours his "job" was to hunt small critters with a Savage single-shot rifle for meat as the family grew their own veggies, but couldn't afford to buy meat. His dad would tell him sternly that he wanted 50 critters for 50 rounds! He said often that was the only meat the family ate for months at a time---his mom knew how to prepare the small game and nobody complained...

Check the area around the chamber. There might have been a bit of dry firing so the edge of the chamber might be damaged.

You may need to replace the hammer spring. Numrich might have them available.

            Good luck.

be very careful with excessive .22 fouling and lead buildup in the chamber and rifling

my grandpa's 552 speedmaster was firing out of battery causing case swell and burst in the ejection port

depending where the small split was it could spray hot gas and powder crumbs on shooter's arm

deep thorough cleaning can solve a lot of common problems

                good luck!
