    Rimfire pistol for Steel Challenge

    Hi ya'll!
I'd like to try out Steel Challenge, and due to the high cost of ammo (200 to 250 rounds of 9mm hurts my wallet) I'd like to get into 22LR.

What guns can I buy new in California that would work for this? I know about the S&W 617, I gun I really like, but I'm hesitant to spend that kind of money upfront not knowing if I will like Steel Challenge or not.

    Thank you.

I would say a Ruger MK, but they're not on the roster. Browning Buckmark is a good alternative.
Never initiate force against another. That should be the underlying principle of your life. But should someone do violence to you, retaliate without hesitation, without reservation, without quarter, until you are sure that he will never wish to harm - or never be capable of harming - you or yours again.

Buckmark. And there is good aftermarket support as well.

I'll pile on for the Buckmark. I use one for 2 gun rimfire and it works very well.

            GSG 1911

GSG 1911 seems to work. I see some Colt 1911's as well.

              I shoot with a variety,

617 with holosun and factory butter smooth action job is my favorite.

Walther CA22 has been the most reliable, shoots any ammo flawlessy.

Sig Mosquito, Advantage arms are good, with the right ammo, and it took a while to find out which for each.

My Sig Trailside and my pair of S&W 41s are the Cadallics of the bunch.

I discover Holosuns 507 dot/circle combo and immediately junked all the old holosights and various red dots.

              Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;

The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere

Good to know about the Holosun 507, been thinking about getting one for a Glock G17 rmr build. Also, those Sig Trailsides look damn sexy too!

                      Burris FF4

The Burris Fastfire 4's are out and also have the circle-dot combo. Seems brighter than the Holosun, but only available in red.

I'm in the Ventura area, would shoot probably mostly Piru, which is where I also shoot IDPA.

I'm a big wheel gun fan, so the S&W 617 appeals to me. I'm just hesitant to spend a Grand upfront not knowing if I like Steel Challenge. Same applies to the S&W 41.

Saw some GSG 1911s but I'm not sure about those. Buck Mark sounds good, perhaps a used Ruger Mark.

I can't say if a Ruger or Buckmark is better for you. I have two MKII bull barrels, as well as a Buckmark URX Camper. I prefer the Rugers, but that's not to say it's better.
There are Buckmarks on roster, so they're easier to get, and will generally be cheaper for you.

High Standards are always accurate and generally old enough for C&R status, no roster needed. Anything with adjustable sights would work, doesn't have to be higher priced Victor or "Space Gun" set up.

The Hammerli X-Esse gets in via Olympic exemption and is "sort of common" in CA LGS. It's basically an upgraded Sig Trailside. Nice adjustable trigger.
