10/22 Takedown Accessories - Backpacker Stock, Scope, Etc.

I mentioned the other day that I've laid money on a 10/22 Takedown. It took enough years to talk myself into it and even though I'd still prefer the Browning in many respects, the price tag I saw locally on it last week was $899 new. As much as I'd like the Browning, I just can't talk myself into $1,000 for a .22 LR right now.

With that said, I've had a number of 10/22 rifles over the years and the most I've committed to accessories was a good Weaver mount, a Triad Tactical Stock Pack on the one, an older Weaver 3x9 on one, a Nikon ProStaff 3x9 on another, and BX-2 triggers.

I'm still not sure of the final configuration on the Takedown; but, for the near future, I'll probably leave it... mostly... stock. However, I have ordered a Magpul Backpacker Stock ($80) to experiment with, will be installing a BX-2 trigger, and am considering a scope. Not a red dot. A scope.

I'm a little askance about a scope on a 10/22 Takedown as it would likely end up on the receiver, bringing to mind questions regarding maintenance of zero. But, I was toying with something at or below $200. I took a quick glance at several threads and an UTG Bug Buster, with the UTG mount seemed popular with some. Any consensus on that vis a vis a 10/22 Takedown?

I thought about a Leupold FX-1 Rimfire 4X, but the $299 list price is a bit off-putting and "in stock" seems a bit sketchy at the moment.

Any other ideas in terms of a scope that will clear the iron sights and won't be "too big" so as to defeat the purpose of a takedown?

I figured on the QD Magpul Swivels and some form of sling. (It won't ride on the stock at all times; but, the time you're out with a rifle and don't have a sling is the time you will find you desperately feel the need for one.)

If it'll fit in the Backpacker's grip compartment, I plan to squirrel a small cleaning kit; probably based on the OTIS cable concept.

Overall, I'd like to keep this kinda simple as I intend to primarily use it in a day pack for those odd opportunity moments. But, any ideas as to 'accessories' which might prove useful or 'better' options?

That scope is a nice one. I had picked one up for my 10/22 takedown and really liked it...

I agree with Quiet. I was going to get this scope and UTube has excellent videos on its use...

I like the idea that it can be mounted low and still not interfere with the rear sight. Like I said, I'm toying with mounting a scope on the Takedown; i.e., it's a grudging acknowledgement that my eyes aren't what they used to be, even if I can still hit milk jug caps at 25 yards with irons on a .22, despite often shooting at the 'color' as much as at the actual cap these days. The fact that they can be mounted low will help keep the overall package from 'bulking up' and kinda defeating the purpose of fitting it in a day pack. (My rifle didn't come with a 'pack,' but the case that will take a shoulder sling.)

How do you like the reticle system?

I went the same route as Quiet. Though I have the 1-6 x24 LPVO. Very happy with the set-up.

I added a the X-22 optic mount to my X-22 backpacker for the takedown. This way I added a cheap AT-3 red dot on the barrel, so no POI shifts with takedown. Keep things small and light weight.

The LPVO route seems like a more logical route if you want magnification with the takedown, this way you can keep 1x for quick offhand work and then add magnification for reaching out further.

For me the 10/22 takedown didn't warrant magnification, as I wasn't lookin for precision out to 100yds or more with it. More for 25 yds or so, and then OK with less precision further out. I mostly shoot if offhand anyway.

Realistically, neither am I. However, as I noted, my eyesight isn't what it used to be and milk jug bottle caps are a 'standard' I use in the context of... "If I can hit that, I can hit a squirrel." Just bear in mind that a squirrel 'blends' better than a white or blue or pink milk jug cap.

Anyway... Anybody else have any other suggestions in terms of useful accessories beyond this or that preference for a KIDD or Timney or whomever's 'part?'

Any further feedback on the Primary Arms' reticle?

I didn't see a bolt release mod, life is so much easier with that.

I have the PA LVPO 22 optic on PA low rings, got both during their open box sale. I got a Midwest Industries rail. All sitting in a Magpul Backpacer.

Changed out the bolt buffer to a volquartsen(?) rubber buffer. Volquartsen bolt release. Extended mag release that extends under the trigger guard.

I am very happy with the gun as it sits. I don't see myself making changes anymore. The stock trigger is quite nice.

Just out of curiosity and a bit of concern vis a vis potentially attaching a scope...

Anyone know of a good cover/case to use on a 10/22 Takedown in a Backpacker stock when stowing the rifle in a pack that will not only accommodate the scope, but provide some protection without bulking things up and weighing things down?

Would a simply neoprene scope cover do the job or is there something 'better' out there?

The factory case the 10/22 comes in fits everything just fine with the optic. But I guess a scope cover could add extra padding.

I appreciate the thought. However, as I noted above, mine didn't come with the 'backpack' case which is likely to fit in a largish day pack. Mine came with the 'flat' case with the shoulder strap which is noticeably wider, at least to my eye. I don't have an 'hosting' service for photos, but here's one off the Internet...



I suppose it is a thought that I can buy the 'backpack' from Ruger, though a $90 MSRP isn't exactly alluring.

Ooh yeah. Mine came with the flat carrying case as well. I'm not sure if I'm of any help. It fits ok. Can there be of any padding concerns? Yeah, but I don't toss my guns around or stack them in bags. For a cheap optic, I'm not too worried about it personally.

So I think a scope cover would help your scenario.

I like the Ruger pack enough I bought a clone of it off Amazon in a slightly larger size for my Marlin 39m and handi rifles. Only real difference was the zippers, otherwise looked like it was made in the same factory. Was a lot cheaper. Hazard tactical makes a pack that looks like it would work well, but the price is high and I am pretty happy with the Ruger pack.
