    .22lr ammo comparison question

CCI Mini-Mag ($400 for 5000) vs Federal Gold Medal Match ($400 for 5000) vs Wolf Match ($500 for 5000)

Price + Performance wise, which one gives the best bang for the buck? Thanks.

+1 buy a couple hundred of each and see what works for your firearm.

Depends. What are you trying to accomplish?

The mini-mags have a much higher velocity than most match ammo, which sometimes works as a detriment.

Are you looking for velocity, or accuracy? If velocity, skip the latter two and go straight for the mini-mags. If you're looking for accuracy, skip the mini-mags and buy a small lot of each of the other two and find out which ones work the best in YOUR firearm.

You have to remember that .22's are a strange little beast and tend to be VERY ammo-specific. Match ammo in one gun might shoot ragged holes, but patterns in another gun.

Out of a pistol, I like the mini mags a lot more. Out of my 10/22, the Wolf Match stuff is golden. Can't beat it with ammo that costs twice as much.

The Federal Gold Match didn't to me any good, at all, out of any of my .22's, but apparently some olympic team won with it quite a few years back.

There is a book listed below that came out either in 2006 or 2007 on Ruger 10-22's. I have it and it is a very good book. Every time I have a question about 10-22's I go to this book. In one early section, the author takes the same gun and tries many different brands of ammo (say a dozen or more). He does this for the standard 10-22 rifle, carbine, and target model. It will give you a good idea of how well different brands of ammo compare as well as how well the different standard 10-22's compare. Becuase of this book, I am a big fan of CCI Standard Velocity 22 LRs. Of course, you need to try your own gun, etc. I hope this helps.

                Never shot Mini Mag.

My Walther GX-1 shot Federal Gold Medal very well, and my Anschutz 1907 shoots Wolf/SK target ammo well.

I shoot a volquartsen 10/22 with Wolf match and Federal Gold Medal both are accurate and reliable in my rifle but the Federal is less expensive and easier to find in stock.
CCI is faster but not as accurate.

Wolf Match is very good .22 match ammo, used for training by competetive shooters. They go for the expensive stuff for actual matches, but the Wolf is great practice ammo (as is SK Standard Plus, same thing in a different brand).

Because Wolf .22 rimfire ammo shoots really well in most rimfire pistols and rifles. Before the price shot up, Wolf Match Target was the best bang for your buck. I remember buying it for $1.90 a box. A brick was slightly less than $19. Bullseye shooters have know about this ammo for years, but never talked about it because they didn't want the supply to dry up. Today that same brick is $50-60 if you can find it.

Now the bullseye shooters are using Aguila SE standard velocity 40 grain solids and 36 grain hollowpoints. It was going or $10 a brick, but now it's up to about $22-25. It doesn't quite shoot as well as Wolf MT in my guns, but good enough for practice. Aguila uses Eley priming compound. When I'm shooting the Aguila, people often ask if I'm shooting Eley because it smells the same. I don't shoot well enough to warrant using Eley.

Before the election, I was at a gunshow picking up a case of Aguila SE. A couple of Middle eastern guys kept asking me, "Why you buy one case? Is good?"

I said, "I'm buying ONE case because they don't have TWO." I paid $200 for that case, which was about double what I paid at the previous show.

Thanks everyone, I recently purchased a new 10/22 and put a Adams & Benette heavy barrel on it and have lousy time getting better than 1" - 1.5" at 50yrds and 3" at 100yrds. I'm just trying different ammo like everyone suggests, that's if I can find .22lr at all online... needlesst to say price is ridiculous
