The only single shot 22s I have seen lately are youth models. If you want to single load, many bolt action rifles will work that way, some you may have to modify the magazine.

There are tons of used ones out there, generally better than super cheap new production models.

Buy used. And don't hesitate if it's old as long as it's in good shape. I have one .22 and it's the rifle I got from my father. He got it in about 1940 when he was 15 and it's a Montgomery Wards Western Field in .22, .22 long, and .22 long rifle. It's a tack driver and will shoot as good as any of the modern guns. Montgomery Wards Western Field range was made mostly by Mossberg.

H&r been out of production since 2016. Probably still a few NiB copies out there. I did manage to score one for just over $200 last year (was a versapak model with an additional 410 barrel, not a sportster though).

JJE (Palmetto State Armory) acquired H&R during the Remington bankruptcy and PSA made some noise about bringing H&R back into production.

I bought a Rossi that came as a 22lr/20ga set new for $120 pre covid. The 22lr barrel weighs a ton as it has the same outer profile as the 20ga shotgun barrel. It shoots like a target rifle tack driver. I had to put a slip-on recoil pad to make the shotgun pleasant to shoot. I haven't seen this combo lately but they make a 22lr/.410 combo.
