I want to get a cheap 10/22 Ruger and convert it to a .17 Mach2, have any of you done this and is the conversion accurate/reliable? I would need to change the barrel and some of the internals of the reciever correct? cost to do this?

There are plenty of conversion kits at about $200, that just consist of a new barrel and charging/cocking handle. Thats it, and the stock 10/22 magazines still work too.
Another option if you want to use the factory stock:

I have shot one of those conversions, they are really cool and I have been thinking about getting one ever since.Originally posted by SOCMOBStraight out of 1984 by George Orwell, better read it before it's banned.Comment

I think the only issue I heard of with the Mach 2's is that the highcap mags (i.e, T.I., Butler, etc.) don't work once you get past ten or 12 rounds due to the shape of the round and the way they stack.
Other than that, I have heard of nothing negative. Be sure to post if you do a conversion!Comment

I have done one using a E.R. Shaw barrel and a heavy bolt handle that they include with the barrel. It's been a flawless converion without any trouble.
I would also install a Volquartsen edge extractor, and a weapon kraft, or yellow jacket bolt buffer. Also, be sure to keep your chamber clean.
Pretty much the same results as the 17hmr , at 100 yards, at 1/3 of the cost.
A nice flat shooter,

Why not just buy a dedicated Mach2 rifle like a savage that has awesome accuracy. By the time you buy the 10/22 and conversion kit your probably in about 450+ dollars. Doesnt make sense to do it that way.
Here you go:
adjustable trigger, 10 round mag and bull barrel for $249.00 and if you shop around you can probably find it cheaper. At this price you can buy the 10-22 and the savage for the same price of the conversion.
read this post before buying a Mach2

I have no experience with this cartridge. Can someone tell me what the ballistic advantages are with this cartridge compared to using a 22LR load like the Aguila Super Maximum 30gr at 1750fps? I'm just trying to justify the cost of converting a 10/22 to the 17Mach2; what would I gain over the hyper velocity Aguila and at what range?
Thanks,

The 17hm2 shoots flatter, a great deal further than a 22LR.I have no experience with this cartridge. Friend, you are better off buying a dedicated 17 caliber rifle (Savage or Marlin. I prefer Savage). It might even be cheaper than the conversion or the same price.
I'd like to suggest a 17HMR over a 17Mach2. Mach2 gets you marginal performance over a 22LR. 17HMR shoots a lot hotter and flatter. Better varmint bullet. The 17Mach2 is a gimmick in my opinion.
Also, have you tried better ammo for your 22LR? After I started feeding my 22 better ammo, it started outshooting 17 caliber rifles. Remember that ammo choices in 17 caliber rimfire are limited. Most will do sub 1" but for match quality you are better off with 22LR.

I converted a 10/22 as well, but had an ammo failure with Hornaday that cracked a Ruger stock magazine. I've heard of this happening to others since. The recommendations I hear are to stick with CCI or Remington HM2.
Other than that, it's amazing fun to shoot and very accurate.Quemadmoeum gladuis neminem occidit, occidentis telum est.
