ATTENTION .17 Mach 2 Owners

ATTENTION: Effective 4/1/09 we have suspended the building of Mach 2s. There is an ammo issue that needs resolved by the manufacturer of the cases used in all Mach 2 rounds. We have had reports of undersized, over-loaded and under-loaded rounds*from all*of the manufacturers of Mach 2 ammo. Reports of exploding rounds have necessitated this decision. Even rifles with thousands of rounds fired without a problem have reported these problems within the past 3 months. Some barrel manufacturers and the major liner provider have ceased production of the Mach 2 pieces until the case issue is resolved.

I do not own a Mach 2 firearm and I do not have any other details on this claimed problem. I ran across this post while doing research on other caliber rimfire rifles. I simply posted this warning to give M2 owners a heads up. I do not know if this is a rumor or printed online innuendo. However, if you are an M2 owner you probably owe it to yourself to do your own due diligence. Good luck to all and I hope this thread will help open up the lines of communication with those M2 owners who are experiencing problems.

Please give more detail regarding this, as there are so many rumors floating around regarding the "issues" with the 17HM2 round, you need to back it up with specific instances, types of rifles, etc.

I do know that years ago Whistle Pig released their 17HM2 barrel and I was one of the first to point out the issues I was having. After trying different ammo, springs, and replacing the barrel, WP decided to remove their barrel from the market. They blamed it on the ammo, but I felt it was the liner in their barrel being too tolerant/tight (normally a good thing).

I've been shooting a Ruger 10/17HM2 EABCO conversion for years (standard barrel) and have never had a problem. This is using all ammo (which, btw, is only made by two or three companies).

Also, I have shot 1000's of rounds through a CZ 452 American in 17HM2 and have never had a split case, ever.

Not sure if your request for more info was directed at me or the OP but I'll reply anyway.

I converted a Ruger 10/22 to 17m2 a few years ago. This was done by replacing the stock Bbl and the charging handle. Most ammo I have used has been pretty consistant with little trouble.

I have experienced a high volume of seperated cases, blowback, etc with Eley brand ammo. So much so that I will not use it.

I don't have any other details nor am I making the claim. I came across the warning while researching custom rimfire rifles and thought it was useful information. I don't plan on wasting anymore time on this subject since I don't own this caliber. I think if you are a Mach 2 owner than you need to do your own due diligence and make up your own mind. From what I am reading off their website, EA Brown & Company did not stop the sale of any of their 17HM2 items, the one the OP posted about referred to rifles sold by Heier's Custom Ruger 10/22's in the 17HM2 barrel (using Whistle Pig barrels, I believe).

As always, if you shoot ANY kind of conversion gun, be very mindful of how clean your gun is, what condition your fired brass looks like and wear eye/ear/hand protection (don't ask me how a square got burnt into my palm from the 10/17HM2 Whistle Pig conversion I did ).

I've got a Savage Mark II in .17M2 and have not had any problems or issues so all this is news to me. I've used only the Eley ammo in my rifle.
