My first rimfire rifle - HK 416 - What to do?

So I went in to just "renew" (get a new one) my FSC as it was required to rent some firearms this Friday (at Route 66 SSP)...

Came out with a new FSC... And this - HK416 in .22LR...

Once I play around with this, will be handing it off to the boys...

So, suggestions/thoughts on making this a better toy to play with? I have read that it has a heavy trigger and could benefit from a lighter spring.

Also, I am thinking of attaching a Vortex Crossfire red dot for $150. I guess not only would I be loving this, my boys (11 and 13) will too...

    Thanks in advanced!

I put a spring kit in mine and a red dot on top. I use it for competition and its great. If I don't clean the chamber every thousand rounds or so I get some failure to extract stoppages, but that's just laziness on my part.

The only other thing I would like to do to mine (on top of last post), is I am thinking I might slot the side and put a button to the bolt hold open so it is easier to clear it. Mostly needed for competition, but nice to have.

Thanks! I already placed an order for the Crossfire...

That said, my eldest (13) does some competition, albeit, handguns. He still hasn't tried rifles, yet. My youngest (11) - this may be his first foray with firearms.

Which genre you competing in with this rimfire?

Yeah, an owner's video from Walther on the HK416 recommends cleaning every 500-rds.

I compete in 2 gun rimfire matches at https://applevalleygunclub.com/

They are really fun and much less costly than a 3 gun or practical pistol match. Next one is this Saturday if you are in the area.

Wow! Thanks for the info! Yeah - absolutely cheaper and less hassle than a 3-gun match.

I am booked this weekend for FD. Let me check the schedule - I think experiencing it would be worth the drive.

That looks like a fun one....

              Congrats on your new gun
It takes a lot of balls to play golf the way I do.

I bought one of these at the beginning of the year, and should have function checked it before taking it home because the BCG seems to jam every time I try to cycle it. I have not shot it yet because of this.

This looks super cool! Don't have a pistol those in .22

Leave it alone for the boys, everyone should know how to use open sights well, as well develop a good trigger finger pull without wrist rolling, even with a heavy trigger. Once those boxes are checked then you can address optics and lighter trigger if need be.

Good for you for getting the kids out and shooting..I am afraid the outdoors has really become a foreign place for the youngsters these days..

Do not know anything about that particular Rifle..But looks like fun..

Thanks! I will check it out then... Never got to rack the rifle - I needed a rimfire and it "felt" (subjectively) better than the M&P that I wasn't willing to wait longer... That, I wanted to support this awesome LGS, anyway. They have been really good to me.

That said - what are you going to do about it? Have you contacted H&K...?

I will stick with the stock trigger but will still be installing a red dot optic. The BUIS will remain, however.

Open iron sights are a "sighting system" not different from LPVO, etc. As you said, I would rather have the kids focus first on trigger control, ie., "one thing at a time." Personally, taking out the aiming part helps in the learning...

                      Thank you!

Yeah - the eldest has done a bit of competitive-type of shooting. Here is a video of him a couple of years back when he was 11, a few months after I began giving him instructions...

Albeit, still have to start him with rifles. Yesterday when we were at Route 66 - I had him try an AR for the first time.

My youngest at 10 is completely new to firearms... I just started him with a Walther P22 yesterday.

Do not know anything about that particular Rifle..But looks like fun..
Can't wait... Plinking is sure to be fun! Looking forward to it.
