I'm having the same problem. I was thinking it had something to do with my my magazine insertion technique. But I noticed the mag that came with the gun works fine, the two spares I bought seem to have the problem.

I am thinking a call to savage is in order. I will update when I do.

The one I just got has this issue too.

Sometimes the mag is hard to put in sometimes not, but always iffy getting the first round out of the mag.

Let us know what they suggest.

This seems to be a common problem with Savage. I have a MKII .22lr bolt gun and it won't feed unless I press upward on the mag. I've considered selling the rifle but other than the magazine issues it's a great rifle. I don't have a solution, but tweeking them yourself might just make the problem worse.

I had a Savage 17HMR mag that I had to 'adjust' to insert and feed correctly. I believe it was a replacement mag. In comparing it to the mag that worked just fine, the mag body was a little wide and I had to press it together gently in a vise. It's worked just fine since then.

Call Savage - they'll give you a new one, for free. They'll need your serial number tho.
              Mine works fine. All three.

I'M havingyhe same problemwith inserting. I worked it in and out to put some wear in it. It works fine now but not as good as the one that came from the factory.

It's part of the mag on the side that catches, a tab from assembly, grinding it down will fix it or just wearing it down too.... should have been made with better tolerances imho

I called Savage, they will replace the mags. I have 6 now and 4 spit the rounds out and the 2 that work, don't like to feed the first round. The issue is the body's are too wide(4). another issue is the depth of the mag does not allow the round to tip up(2). They also said to send the entire rifle back if I want so they can tweek it for me, I have 3 of them.

                        savage .17 hmr problems

Well I guess I have gotten four "extra" mags with little problem.
To tight to insert/remove, needed a polish on the gide part of the mags,
and remove the "extra" metal on the cheep crush pins.
Mags go in and out with ease... no extra play still tight, only needed a tad removed, like a bur or two on the guides.

I have not had any pop the rounds out. All feeds good for me.

Got mags you do not want? Pm me to ship to me, I will give them a home.

Also is there a mag that holds more than the factory five?????

Ive had to tweak a few of the ones just a bit to get them to feed right

Not that I have seen but would really like to pick up a 10 rnd mag if anyone makes them

If you leave your mags loaded at home when not shooting that helped on one of my mags. The other 2 I sprayed with silicone spray and it cured the problem. Also If you doing quick mag changes check the tolerances on the top inserted portion of each mag. If it's real tight try 1500 or 2000 grit sandpaper and polish it for easier in out
