score an unicorn and question for scope - 10/22 TD X-22

Having been thinking about 10/22 for a while, and zero at takedown with a Magpul X-22 Backpacker stock. Hunting for the target for at least 3 months, and finally pulled the trigger last mid-night at sportsman 10/22TD 31152

knock on wood that the store will have it as it promises.

Here is a question, should I put a scope on it?

I prefer a scope for my rifle, and more while getting older. However, I am worrying about how the the receiver-mount scope can hold zero on a takedown. And I can see a barrel-mounted red-dot, but not a scope.

I do intent to treat this 10/22 as its best - a survive rifle and plink on a regular day

I would get a good set of peep sights for it. Imo a scope kinda defeats the purpose of a take down.

Well worth equipping that great rifle with a great dot.

        Bob,

thanks for the tip and nice takedowns you had.

the mag release is probably the first item I will add. the HS510C is on the high end that I probably won't be able to "pull the trigger" at this moment.

Have fun in Hawaii.... nothing beat that

yeah. a good sight is better fo the TD to keep its low profile. If I can make a 2" group at 50 yard without scope/reddot, I probably just stay as is

There's some good QR/QD rings. I have Warnes on a couple rifles. Leupold on another.

For scoped I use a volquartsen TD barrel with a cantilever scope mount. This maintains zero perfectly, the downside is cost. It did allow me to keep the original barrel and mount a red dot on it, so I can switch back and forth at will which is pretty sweet.

If you decide to go this route one thing to keep in mind is that because the rail is a bit far forward, eye relief is important. I initially wanted to use a primary arms 6x, but it's got about 3" of eye relief so I was uncomfortably far forward on the stock to get a good sight picture. I removed that scope (which is super nice for its price) and mounted it on a 10/22 which I gave to a friend. That'd be a good choice if you just want an inexpensive fixed scope for reciever mount imo, and deal with zero changes when they happen.

After that I went with a vortex diamondback with ao, which was really nice but weighed about as much as the rifle and with the hood on was about as long. Slight exaggeration but it definitely took it away from my concept of a fun rifle to toss in a bag and almost forget about it until it was time to use it.

I ended up finalizing on the Leupold 4x rimfire scope, which has really nice glass for its price and almost 5" of eye relief.

Overall I'm really happy with how it turned out, although some of the upgrades were a bit overkill. Happy to share pics if you are interested.

4X, and compact(6" or 7" length max) . The long scope will defeat the purpose of takedown.
Edit: Add the pictures. it fit the Ruger 10/22 bag.

On my takedown target I went with a Magpul barrel mount and Burris FF3 red dot. IMO this is an ideal setup because it's inexpensive, accurate, holds zero, is relatively clean looking, portable, and still balanced.

I do like the Magpul scope mount for the barrel.
My Holosun 810C green quick disconnects nicely.

On the black Magpul, the tech site is the rail mounted version.
It co witnesses thru that CT red dot. (Green or Red buttons for my

Rifle with scoped barrel mounted. The scope is pretty reasonably sized for the rifle imo.

Closer view of the cantilever mount. It wouldn't clear the charging handle forward, but not an issue as you need to lock the handle back to take the rifle down anyway.

In the process of taking the barrel down. There is plenty of clearance, and with the eye relief on the Leupold scope I could probably mount it slightly farther forward. Charging handle is an extended version, substantially bigger than the stock handle.

Scope mounted barrel in the bag. It just fits, but the flap can't quite close so I fold it over to protect the tip of the barrel.

Rifle in bag with scope mounted barrel in pocket. It zips just fine and is easy to transport.

Rifle with Bushnell trs25, magpul mount, and stock barrel.

Hopefully that's of some interest if anyone is considering the same option. I saw plenty of discussion when researching the purchase, but few details about how it actually works together in assembling a system.

Edit: anyone got any advice on fixing image width via bbcode?

2nd edit: pulled images, left urls. Someone who is more familiar with this venerable forum software can maybe fix. Been too many years since I've worked with this version of vbulletin.

thanks. the barrel with mount probably the ultimate way to go if the sight doesn't work for me. 4" group at 50 yard is what I am looking for with good 22lr ammo.

I was considering a primary arms 1-6x dedicated 22lr scope for mine as well. But as others have stated, it kinda defeats the purpose of a takedown, for light weight carry.

The primary arms 6x fixed is tiny. Super lightweight. Lighter than my Leupold 4x. Only problem is no way to attach it to the barrel and have it be comfortable to shoot that I've found, so you're dealing with potential zero shift every time you break the gun down and put it back together. Love the reticle on it, very easy to shoot.
