Can 22 short be used in 22lr pistols? I was told it can be used without doing damage, but would like to hear the advice of this forum.

In a revolver, I would see no functional issues. Accuracy is a maybe. In a pistol, it might not (and probably won't) function correctly. In a bolt action, you might see some accuracy issues as the bullet won't engage the lands as quickly as it would if it came out of a .22LR round... -
^ All correct and I've tried them all./Chris

Now all that being said, I wouldn't expect to see actual damage... but the firearm probably won't function quite right unless it's actually designed to be chambered in .22 Short as well. I have seen a bolt rifle that is specifically chambered in ".22 Short, Long, and Long Rifle"... and it's probably only about 15 years younger than my 85-ish year old grandpa.Comment

Don't forget the many lever actions out there that will shoot .22short, long and long rifle./Chris

I have a Winchester slide action ( mod 62 ) that will shoot all 3 .22 rounds.Actually I only started collecting Milsurps 3 years ago. I think I might own about 24...They're cheaper than guns that will most likely never get the opportunity to kill somebody...

You just need to scrub out the chamber if you have been shooting a lot of the shorter rounds and then want to shoot the longer ones.
Same as shooting .38 Special in a .357 revolver.
No big deal really.

I've fired .22shorts and .22longs, and all manner of CB's out of semi-auto .22lr's before. They work fine. You have to chamber them yourself manually, and they typically won't cycle the action at all, so you have to work the action manually also just to eject the shell.
It works totally fine and is really quiet
I love shooting .22 CB shorts or longs out of a bolt-action gun. Quieter than most pellet guns! Please read the Calguns Wiki
Laws that forbid the carrying of arms...disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes...Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.

Yep yep, what he said -- Shooting the shorter rounds leaves extra carbon/lead fouling in the empty space in the chamber. Make sure you clean it well after shooting a lot of shorts!Comment
