    Ruger 10/22 where next.

I kind of inherited a ruger 10/22 several years ago. used to be wifes' brother's but he was killed in a car crashabout 15 years back. Rifle was in rotten condition when I found it in a shed at mother in law's (with 2 hicap mags whihc was handy) but I cleaned it up and added scope etc and it went from there. Now it has a Butler Creek heavy barrel, Fajen thumbhole stock. 3 - 10x scope, harris bipod. Howeve rthe receiver and all the trigger group / innards etc are the same and still 20+ years old. What should be my next mods to make it as accurate as possible? ps Money is at a premium so cheapest and greatets effect first.

Unfortunately, the greatest is not cheapest. If you can fork out 200 bones then look into the Volquartsen TG2000 (trigger group) Its the whole replacement.

From what I hear, its the bees knees.

So does this Volquartsen kit replace everything in there? Is this a match standard trigger group??

The Trigger Guard 2000 is a complete CNC machined trigger guard equipped with precision EDM parts.

        Features:
Internal pretravel adjustment that is set at the factory in order to greatly reduce pretravel
CNC machined from a solid billet of high strength aircraft aluminum
Hammer is precision ground 440C stainless steel hardened component of 58 Rc.
Sear and disconnector are EDM manufactured parts made of A2 hardened tool steel with tolerances being held to +/- .0002"
        Black anodized
        Overtravel adjustment screw
The trigger is reset internally to eliminate any dragging or inconsistencies caused by a conventional trigger plunger.
        Custom springs
        Automatic bolt release
        Extended magazine release

        Comes in black or silver

You could just go w/ the target hammer: http://www.rimfiresports.com/merchan...egory_Code=R1A

As far as bang for your buck, I'd go w/ the VQ target hammer and extractor (http://www.rimfiresports.com/merchan...egory_Code=R1A). It's diminishing returns after that....

Yeah, the hammer was a fairly easy install, and there are some other aftermarket parts you can do yourself. Does your 10/22 have the auto-bolt release already?

it has nothing that wasn't on it 20+ years ago (barrel and stock excepted) it's internals are as stock as an untouched can of chicken stock which is odds on to win a contest for being original and untouched.

First, get thee to rimfirecentral.com and do some searching. The stickies will probably answer most of your questions. If you are handy and have tools and machine access, you can do everything for free, or very close to free.

Based on where you are at with your build:

                1. Pin and radius the bolt. A DIY job if you have access to a mill. If not, send your bolt to Randy at CPC, or buy a new Kidd bolt. Pinning will reduce flyers and radiusing the bottom-rear of the bolt smooths out bolt function as the bolt passes over the hammer.

                2. You can do alot of trigger work on your own, and for (nearly) free. Stone the notch in the hammer to lighten pull. You can stone and polish the hammer and sear to make a cleaner pull. Also, you can radius and polish the trigger return plunger, which makes the pull less notchy.

The VQ group is nice, but I think most would disagree that it's the "bees knees." The bees knees is the Kidd 2-stage trigger group. Following that is refurbishing of the stock trigger group, either DIY or have someone like swampf0x (search RFC) do it.

I recommend the Kidd over the Volquartsen, too. I bought a brand new Volquartsen and had to replace the ejector on it because it was too thick and would not allow the bolt to be held back. For $200, all the parts should be PERFECT out of the box.

Once that was fixed, I have to say it fires nicely, but not $200 better than the stock trigger. You could easily replace a few parts in the standard trigger to get better performance for a fraction of the cost.

I wouldn't opt for either Kidd or Volquartsen unless you have the money and want to go all the way with your upgrade.

I'd recommend replacing all the parts on the bolt assembly (except the bolt) with Volquartsen or some other higher quality components, too.

My recomendation is not popular with some , I always say that everyone should have a 10/22 . You have already seen that they can turn into a money pit with all the aftermarket item . If you want to get serious about accuracy save your money and buy a decent bolt rifle , It will be cheaper in the long run.

In the long run, a bolt gun will cost you 3000+ after all the upgrades. (remember, you said long run)

But it's so much fun modifying them.

stringer is right most of the drop in parts out there duplicate what a good gunsmith or an experienced amateur can do, I also agree w/ popnsplat for real accuracy buy a bolt action. Pretty much the same deal with centerfire rifles too.

I agree with Coop44 and Stringer. RimfireCentral has a lot of tutorials on how to work the factory parts into custom pieces. Sometimes all it needs is some polishing (carefully).

Watch the Marketplace forum and build up your rifle with some select pieces.

I've got a drawer full of parts waiting to get "stoned."
