Advice on 22 rifle for teaching sons to shoot

So I'm probably going to pick up a 22 rifle in the very near future to hold on to until my boys are ready to learn. I've looked at the Ruger 10/22 and Winchester Wildcat, which uses the same magazines, and so far I'm leaning towards the Winchester. I'm looking to spend $300 or less as this will literally be just for learning, and probably some light plinking by myself. Wondering what other options I should be looking at in that price range.

    Thanks

Spend a bit more and go for an M&P 15-22 to get them used to an AR style gun.

If they are not ready to shoot yet, they will have several years of fun.

I'll second the 60. Just start with loading 1 at a time.

My son really loved the 1022 stainless steel that I had squirreled away for him for about four years :-)

My other buddy started with a bolt action rifle to teach his son the fundamentals in a safer way

Also worth recommending is a heritage Roughrider single action 22 pistol lots of fun to shoot and all the kids like it

15 Dash22 is nice and light weight there is also a colt Walther I am422 that is a nice blend of metal realistic feel and light weight

I plan on that as well later on, as when they get older they'll be able to play with my arsenal of AR style rifles, but for now I just want to pick up a cheap plinker like the 10/22. Get them used to both styles of rifles.

I should mention, I don't currently own any 22 firearms myself as I never saw the value. Now that I have young boys, I see the value.

Mine enjoyed a semi automatic 22 more than bolts. Kids today don’t have the attention span the kids of years ago did. Let them have fun right away so they will want to do it more often.

Just grab a CMMG conversion bolt and have at it.

single shot followed by a bolt or lever repeater.. semiauto after they know how to handle a rifle safely on their own.. used rifles are more forgiving for learning bumps n scrapes.. new gun is a good goal for the youngin's to work for.. good luck

A Marlin 795 is pretty sweet too. Same gun as the Marlin 60 except the 795 uses a box magazine.

Marlin 60 or 10/22. Also, use a big contoured bag that holds the rifle. It keeps the kids from picking it up and trying to sweep everyone. The rifle just sits in the sandbag. I really appreciated it when teaching my kids.

I think a lever is a bad idea. They will point it all over the place trying to cycle the action.

22s are a lot of fun to shoot. I would lean towards a bolt action for kids to start, simpler and safer to get started. 10/22s are a ton of fun, but they don’t lock the bolt open when the mag is empty and the bolt lock/release is finicky unless you do a mod. I enjoy my 10/22 takedown, but had to add a bolt release mod.
My concern would be that kids can pick up bad habits quickly. A bolt action is simple and easy to learn safe habits.
