Long distance w/22LR

I watch X Ring on youtube and they said shooting 22LR at 300 yards is like shooting 1,000 yards with 6.5 CRM. So I took my CZ 455 w/Viper PST II 4-16x44 and 0 MOA EGW base to the range a few weeks ago. However, since I zero @ 50 yards, elevation was 44 MOA...which was about 20 MOA more than what my scope had.

I swapped the 0 MOA base with a 20 MOA base and replaced the scope with a Burris Veracity 5-25x50. Got it zeroed at 50 yards and then tried a few shots at 100 yards (app said 5.7 MOA, but it was closer to 6.25).

Then I tried a 22LR 100 yd challenge target. Left to right, top to bottom. I got 4 shots in the black so I guess 40% can't be considered a fluke...though not sure what happened to the last shot.

Took it out to 200 yards (23 MOA) and I think I was hitting the target since I didn't see any impacts in the dirt behind the target.

Tried 300 yards (44 MOA), but my scope topped out at 34 MOA so had to holdover for about 10 MOA. Once I got the holdover right, I could see 15" targets slightly moving.

Next time, I'll have to put paper target at 200 yards to see how it groups.

On my MPA BA 6.5 CRM with Hornady 140gr ELD, 44 MOA equates to ~1300 yards.

Might be a decent way to save some centerfire ammo while challenging myself to some precision (rimfire) shooting.

Long range 22lr is a hoot. My little Savage mk2 fvsr will tag 12"x12" steel @200yds with boring regularity. We don't mess with dialing range up or down and just use known hold overs. We do this with a 4x-12x variable scope.

For new shooters the giggle factor is high when they realize how fun it is.

Another good site is the extreme long range shootering organization (elrso.com) they even have rules for competition with 22lr.

I am surprised my $200 Savage MKII F is accurate at 100 yards using Eley Target ammo I get 1-inch groups consistently in slight breezy conditions. CCI Green Tag is all over the place though. I am sticking with Eley Target.

They used to run 200 yd .22lr matches at BRRC, they were fun.

I don't want to go the Vudoo route so I'm going to keep my CZ 455 and try an IBI barrel.

I recently watched a Vudoo video about barrel cleaning and I basically did everything they said not to do. I have a CZ 22LR bull barrel and it's not grouping as well as in the past so maybe I did some harm.

I've tried SK standard plus, Wolf match extra, Geco match, FGMM, Norma match and a few others and it seemed to like FGMM the best. However, I don't think FGMM is subsonic since it chronographed around 1090 fps.

I wanted to try some Lapua center x, but couldn't find any.

If anyone has any good 22LR ammo, I'm open to suggestions.

If you're in a place that allows it, try hitting spent shotgun hulls at various distances. Much more entertaining that putting holes in paper.

So interesting. I have a 18" barreled Ruger American and I can not get good consistency from FGMM, shoots around 2MOA for me. The best accuracy I get is from CCI copper plated 40gr round nose ammo. I get good accuracy from Eley force, but those are hard to find and more expensive than cci. My rifle seems to like the plated, heavier, higher velocity ammo. But, this is shooting 100 yards max.... def following this post

I carved out a 400yd range on my place years ago and we play a version of kick the can with our 22's. We start at 20 yds or so and shoot the can until we can't see or hit it any more. You burn more ammo, but gauging random ranges is great practice.

Most subsonics work pretty well and we have settled on Aguila for most uses.
