10/22 Accuracy Test: CCI Mini-Mags vs Standard

Every gun is different, but I wanted to test the accuracy of my 10/22 using "everyday ammo". The kind that you can pick up at Big-5, Walmart, etc. (well before COVID). I recently conducted a head-to-head test with CCI Mini-Mags, Federal Auto Match, and Aguila Super Extra, where Mini-Mags surprisingly came in last place (video here: https://youtu.be/Hz7seUqEd68 )

This time, I test if Standard Velocity could do better. And testing it against regular Mini-Mags and "Swamp People" Hollow Points.

I appreciate your no knucklehead, no asininery approach to an ammo test. Well done.

With the ammo market going 1/2 bubble off plumb it can help buyers to try to buy the ammo that's most likely to do well in their 22lr du jour. Might save someone some time/money.

*Aguila does have a distinctive powder smell. That's always the first thing I hear when I let someone try it.

      Thanks.

I learned from the last 22LR shortage to stock up whenever it went on sale. But with 2020's craziness, I thought I'd revisit some of the ammo assumptions and do so more scientifically. Though with the current shortages, I'm limited to the few ammo brands I stocked up on. This is the last 2 boxes of Standard I had so I'm glad I was able to include it in testing. Now I know why "Swamp People" HP was always on sale at Big-5. Haha.

To me, Aguila has a hint of burned sugar cane fields or a grass fire. Maybe I should do a "Wine Tasting" test of various 22LR smells next. ;-)

That surprised me. I am a fan of the 40gr LRN ammo in both high & standard velocity.

I discovered Aguila during the last Great .22 Ammo Drought & was pleasantly surprised. Always goes bang (funny smelling Eley primer) and accuracy with my 10/22s in my less exacting accracy tests was right there with CCI, especially the standard velocity.

Interesting---I always enjoy somebody who takes his testing seriously! I agree, every 22 is different---sometimes WAY different... My particular 10-22 was a brand new "stainless" 10-22 that I bought from the gun store I was managing and I installed a complete Volquartsen heavy, fluted, stainless barrel and trigger kit (just a hair over 2 lbs---standard trigger was 6 1/2-7 lbs) and Volquartsen synthetic stock. I had a Leupold 6.5-20X AO scope lying around so I mounted it in a set of Millet rings because that's what the store had in stock at the time (I intended to replace the rings with something nicer, but the whole set-up worked so well, I just let it be)---this was the first heavy-barrel set-up I had ever seen at the SHOT Show in the early 90s. Dime size 10 shot groups and much smaller were common depending on ammo it liked---there was a particular batch of Fiocchi 22 rifle match that would literally shoot one ragged hole (!) (50 yards, solid benchrest)---this ammo was discontinued many moons ago, but I stashed away 5 bricks of it---still have several bricks of it. Back when my eyes were much younger, I entered several "club" 22 matches---won every time---this rifle is so accurate, it's actually boring to shoot---do your part and it performs every time.
But, remember, just because it "likes" a certain ammo, doesn't mean your rifle will "like" that ammo! Also, my shooting was done always outdoors and there was wind to deal with...

            Thanks OP. Very interesting.
Did you do any Aguila interceptor (very very high speed) and sub-sonic "sniper" (very very heavy and slow - 22 short brass w/ all bullet that makes 22LR) testing done? I stocked up on those during the 22 shortage but did not touch them yet.

I've tried Re-Conducting the CCI Standard test following new testing guidelines suggested by precision shooters and seasoning the barrel. I got cleaner results but surprisingly not really better grouping by CCI Standard: https://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/....php?t=1658796

No, but I'd like to try those. Obviously, choices in 22LR are non-existent. I had "standardized" on CCI mini-mags and Aguila Super-Extra HV before COVID. This current batch of testing came about because I found some random boxes of "other" 22Lr brands/makes when doing inventory on my supplies. The SSS ammo sounds particularly good a defensive pistol because the heavier bullet weight should cause more damage on a target at close range.

Oh, I'm a Marlin guy too. I'll be conducting ammo tests with the ol' 60 next.

My precision shooting friend had some blunt criticism about my testing setup. https://youtu.be/_nvM5hE1yX4
