    Inherited some guns

Wife brought back 8 long guns she inherited. A couple were really nice old rimfires, which are shown in pic.

Old Fieldmaster 572 and a Sears Roebuck model 46. The Fieldmaster shoots awesome. Had a bit of a problem chambering LR, but after cleaning the chamber, it now functions flawlessly.

Haven't shot the lever action Sears as it was missing the mag. Found one off ebay so next time I'm at the cabin (Utah, where we keep guns), I'm going to take it out and shoot it. Most of the ammo she brought for them was shorts, which makes sense as her Uncle who she inherited them from owned a large farm and likely used them to pick off pests.

Anyone familiar with the JC Higgins/Roebuck model 46? I know its same as the Marlin 56, just made for Sears to sell.

The Marlin 56 was a 7 or 12 round "clip" magazine fed rifle, as opposed to the Marlin 57 which had a tubular magazine. These rifles were also sold under the Sears and JC Higgins brands with slightly different parts - no gold triggers and a different butt pad/spacer. Most should be C&R eligible in that they were made in the mid 1950s to about 1968 or so.

All of these are short-throw "Levermatics" and are fun to shoot!

They were also made in .22 M and .30cal.

I have the same Sears 46 DL and it is one of my favorite .22s to shoot. I am looking to pick up a tubular sister for it as well.

      Have fun shooting it OP.

Interesting website showing who made what for Sears, J.C Higgins, Ted Williams.
At one point Sears bought Savage, who had earlier bought up Stevens.
It's really a mess with everybody swapping models and making slight changes to make them "different" as they went along.
Scroll down to the bottom of the list and see even more maker info.

Thanks for all the replies and the great links!!!!! I did see that it was a very short, 2" stroke or so on the lever, so it should be fun to shoot.

The mag I found for it off ebay was a 5 rounder and I think it was for the Sears version as the Marlin's usually have their name imprinted on bottom of mag.

Was able to find some 10 rounders at Numrich so I just bought three of those.

I'll be back up there in a few weeks and will get to shoot it then.

One last post for your consideration:

Model 56 Guide - Disassemble, Assemble, Stock Refinish and Bluing

Model 56 Steel Receiver Dis-assembly, reassembly, stock finishing and bluing would not have been possible without the guidance and assistance of RC members NAA_Silent, woodstock63 and the research of the many posts by many other RC members. NAA_Silent provided the guidance with his photo guide...

I have a 572 also. It's my favorite pump gun. One of my overall favorites.

Buy 22 lr not shorts less expensive and that is what they were designed for. No reason to buy shorts.

Well, 22 short out of a 16" bbl is pretty danged quiet. Sometimes that's reason enough.

I always wanted one. Been looking at them online and at a few stores when they pop up, but it's hard to find one in good condition. Her uncle kept this one in great condition.

Subsonic .22 shorts are quieter than my pellet gun, by far!!!!

Yep it is the .22 Mag I need yet.

Actually the Model 62 Levermatic was made in .30 Carbine, and also .256 Winchester caliber.

Nice little collection. Should bring many hours of fun shooting them.
