For a takedown, it makes sense that the sights or red dot stay with the barrel. I didn't have a good time with the stock sights. For open sights, there is the HiViz setup. The next step up would be the Skinner peep sight that fits in the factory dovetail. For red dot, the Magpul X22 has a barrel red dot mount. I'm not sure what else is out there.
I enjoyed the X22 setup but sold it because even with the barrel mounted red dot, the factory barrel didn't group as well as my non-takedown 10/22s.
If I get another, I will go with the peep sights and the X22 stock. It will make the package more compact which is the whole point. The storage for the three mags is the best part.
For a small non-takedown 10/22, I would go with the Ruger Compact 10/22. 16" barrel with HiViz sights, 34" long, 4.4 lbs. I really like the Ruger modular stock. If it is too cramped for you, plenty of people have the extra interchangeable normal buttstock to buy used or Ruger sells them new.
The second smallest non-takedown is TCR22. It is accurate enough to benefit from a lightweight scope like Simmons 22Mag 4x32 ($30, 8.2 ozs.) or a Holosun red dot (under 4 oz). My stock 17" TCR22 is 35" long and 4.34 lbs. With the Simmons scope and rings it is 4.99 lbs. The TCR22 comes stock with a peep sight that works well if you stay with open sights. Trimming the barrel to 16" would make it 34" long like the Ruger Compact.Last edited by pinger; 07-07-2020, 1:56 AM.Comment

The " Standard " or the " Carbine " versions are my pick. They just look classic to my aging eyes.
The rest of the line up screams " modern" to me. The take down in particular screams " ugly ", " abhorrent ".

I love my takedown with Magpul stock. I put it in a backpack for the range to play around with after handgun practice. The backpack really is convenient compared to a long rifle case imo. As far as accuracy goes, i have no complaints but, then again i have the stock fiber optic sights and only really shoot out to 80 yards.
I’ve never hunted before, even small game, but i can hit the little prairie dog targets at 40+ yards pretty consistently.
I say go for the magpul backpacker 1022. My experience with it had been awesome. If you really want to attach an optic to the barrel, there’s probably a way to do it. The aftermarket for the 1022 is pretty expansiveComment

I agree also going with the Magpul Backpacker stock. Get it already configured with that stock from Ruger. You’ll come out a bit cheaper that way vs. buying the standard 10/22 breakdown and then buying the stock separate. Magpul also has a barrel mounted short pic rail that replaces the Factory barrel block. Slick set up if you’re going to run a forward mounted small red like an Aimpoint micro, Holosun, etc.I love my takedown with Magpul stock. I have a Simmons scope but haven’t got to use it because of the rings it came with. I am using my Sig Romeo 5 instead. I was thinking of getting a Tac Sol 1022.For a takedown, it makes sense that the sights or red dot stay with the barrel. I didn't have a good time with the stock sights. I had a Takedown 10/22 some years back when they first came out. Had to say, I wasn't very impressed, especially compared against my non-takedown version. I (regretfully) sold it when I needed cash.
That said, this was before all the aftermarket accessories came out specifically for the TD model. Had the Magpul stock been available then, I might have kept it.
The takedown feature is/was a big selling point for me because I had a smallish car and those long rifle cases are too conspicuous. I would very much like if Ruger made a TD version of their GSR Scout. For a 10/22, however, even the standard models are fairly compact, and so needn't be a breakdown for my purposes."Two dead?!? HOW?!?"
[sigh] "Bullets, mortar fire, heavy artillery salvos, terminal syphilis, bad luck --- the usual things, Captain."Comment

I like the Ruger backpack that came with the regular takedown. I could fit two takedown rifles at the same time and put two handguns in the front pockets. It is a very handy range kit. I have a small hatchback that has small luggage space if the rear seats are up. That is my motivation for takedown or shorter rifles. I like to go shooting often and don't like to advertise that I am a gun owner. I try to avoid loading multiple long gun cases into my car. The smaller the case, the better.
In the main section of the Ruger backpack, I fit one 10/22 Takedown Lite (Ruger Modular Takedown stock) w/scope and one PC Carbine minimum length (the two buttstock extensions removed) with red dot and Midwest Industries M-Lok foreend. The inside pockets keep all the parts separated.
The Takedown Lite comes with a larger rectangle suitcase style case. While having a neutral appearance, it isn't as useful for multiple guns because it doesn't have all the sleeves to keep multiple parts away from each other.
With that backpack, probably any takedown stock would be good.Comment

Another vote for the Magpul backpacker. - the barrel storage and places for 3 extra 10 round mags (plus one in the magwell) makes for a neat package.
If you're "lo budget" but still want a "takedown", you could look at the QBD (quick break down) stock from ProMag/Arcangel on a base model 10/22, or whatever you happen to have in a barreled action. I have both, just to have "long guns" in small discreet packages. 16" threaded barrels on both to make 'em a little more compact.
If you get the lockup dialed in correctly, the accuracy should stay pretty solid through the disassembly/reassembly process. I've done multiple tests with a laser boresight and red dot, always seems to return to zero for me.Comment

I am looking to spend some money, and you can never have too many 10/22's. So I was on the Ruger website, and I found a tactical model with a 16 inch barrel, cool, I'm gonna try and buy one. Nope, not available, in fact pretty much all of the models are unavailable. Is Ruger shut down for the 'Rona? All of their single actions are unavailable as well.Comment
