    Russian 22LR rounds

    We had some Russian 22 rounds donated for our newbies outreach programme, and I'm wondering whether anyone here might know anything about these.

    The light green boxes are marked 'Junior' '.22 long rifle rim fire cartridges', 'sport-hunting', and 'Klimovsk stamping plant Klimovsk'. Other markings on the box are in English, so they were obviously intended for export to an English-speaking country. They are marked 'non-corrosive'.

    The rounds are steel case, 'V' headstamp, lead bullet which appears to be the common round-nose 40gr.

    Has anyone used these? Accuracy? Misfires, feed faliures, jams, etc.?

    I would imagine that these should be rather inexpensive in quantity.....does anyone know of a supplier?

    cheers

    This is what my buddy said about this ammo;

    That Junior stuff is so greasy you need to lay it on a paper towel in the sun for an hour and wipe it off before you use it.
    Otherwise, your gun is instantly gunked up.
    It really makes 1022 magazines sticky.

      I found the steel case ammo to be poor quality. I kept a 50rd box due to the novelty of steel case .22lr ammo which is rarely seen.

            I tried a box out of a bolt action .22 rifle. The cases apparently didn't create a tight gas seal and I got gas back in the face several times. I wouldn't recommend them for new shooters.

                smle-man,

                Thank you.... : )

                It would seem reasonable that a steel case, as opposed to the usual thin brass, might provide inadequate obturation at the low pressures involved with 22LR.

                I'll try some of these myself, just for curiosity, in an old bolt 22, but won't provide them to our young people.

                They may be just a curious collectible oddment, actually......I'll offer boxes them to our friends, in trade for boxes of ordinary brass-cased 22 for our range use, so that they can go on the shelf as amusing display curiosities.

                And I am disappointed, on one level.........I had always wondered why some manufacturer wouldn't offer 22 rounds with soft iron cases, and quietly just assumed that it would be a matter of case draw tooling life. The lesser cost of iron would seem a major advantage, otherwise.....not to mention the range convenience of being able to pick up the cases with a magnetic sweeper device.

                cheers
