S&W Model 22-A tackdriver

Acquired one from Calgunner and range finally opened so today dialed it in from rest and then fired about 200 rounds standing. Love it. Completely shot out center of target, about 3 inch group at 7 yards, about as well as these 76 yr old eyes can do. Toss up between Smith and Buck Mark although Browningi is a bit lighter

I have a lot of fun with my S&W-22A with a red dot. I do need to contact S&W and get a replacement for the "recoil spacer", a plastic part that the recoil guide seats into. Being plastic it wears out but I've heard S&W will send you a couple for free. Did you get the manual with the purchase? If not download a copy from the web. Pretty easy to disassemble for cleaning but make sure the slide is locked back before you press the barrel take-down button and attempt to lift the barrel out.

Easy on the pocket book to buy and shoot.
Still on Roster so keeps the price down.
Picked this one up to give my 2206 a rest.
Did add the red dot last year.
Shoot 200 to 300rds every outing with little problems.
Only 1 or 2 FTF but brass always shows a strong hit.
Never had a mechanical issue with my 22A-1
Runs like a top and easy to clean.

Very happy with my 22A-1. Owned it for several years and not one malfunction. Get some recoil spacers. Lost the one that came with the my 22A-1 the first time I cleaned it. Luckily I had ordered a couple of spares. Even luckier I found the one I lost months later.

Anyway, an underappreciated S&W that is a lot of fun to own and shoot.

Racking handle for 22A

I am new at this game. Bought a 22A. Love the gun, but it is really hard for me to rack the slide. I have read other posts from people who have this problem. Victory has handles from Tandemkross but nothing for the 22A. Anybody know someone who makes a third party charging ring?

I very much regret selling my 22A! I could shoot a shotgun shell almost every shot at 25 yards from a rest. This thread makes me think I need to go pick another one up.

I have a 22A that I must of put 50,000 rounds through it. It is a good shooter. The frame has worn a bit from the slide moving back and fourth but it still shoots very well. It does not jam at all and when it does, what it needs is to have the chamber and breech face cleaned from all of the gunpowder residue. Yes, you need to replace the plastic buffer every 5,000 shots or so. When it looks ratty change it. It is very easy to scope or put a red dot.

Good to see this thread. Feedback on the Smith 22A is rare. I used to own 2 Browning Buck Mark and sold them away for need of money, leaving me with a stash of left over 22lr ammunition.

The Smith 22A, the Ruger 10 22, and the Savage 22 rimfire semi auto rifle picked my attention lately.

The Bushnell TRS-25 Red Dot on sale below $50, people buy 1 or 2, many China Red Dot on Amazon range $20-$30, people buy 1 or 2. That include myself, I had 3 Bushnell TRS-25, and 3 China cheapy Amazon red dot, and people start looking for a pistol to mount the Red Dot to. Back then, there are only two most popular pistols which built in weaver rail are S&W 22A1 and Buckmark Contour. I bought both of them so I can mount the Red Dots, the SW 22A1 is more favor because the price is about $100 less than the Buckmark Contour. I shoot thousands of rounds on the 22A1, the pistol function flawlessly. And then one day I just lost interest on both of them, put them into the safe and they never have the chance to coat the flitty residue of the .22RL ammo.
(Notes, W&S introduced 22A then later they produced the up grade version 22A1, for the difference between 22A and A1 just ask the old fart they will know)

I've posted this image 100's of times here but it bears repeating...


There is no cheaper or capable option in the .22 plinker world than the S&W22a with the Bushy TRS-25 red dot. This has been my wife's Steel Challenge pistol since 2014. The pistol was bought used for sub $300.00 and snagged the TRS for $45.00.

As others have said, grab more of the recoil buffer/spacers - they are expendable. Also, after 1000's of rounds through this pistol I have learned that they prefer to run dry. A little CLP on a Qtip is all the lube you need.

All in all, you just can't go wrong with this discontinued gem.

look at the rear of the slide and you'll see an allen head i tapped into it (on both sides) makes operating it EZ...

I liked my S&W 22-A so much that I just bought the stainless steel variant 22S from a Calgunner. Looking forward to its release from jail.
