I bought mine when they first came out. Personally I would have bought the mag pull backpacker version. I bought the stock and it is awesome. I would go stainless. For all the complaining it has one of the better 10/22 triggers out of my 10/22’s. Mag pul also sells a mount for a red dot that mounts on the barrel. Nice little set up with the two cheek pieces. Don’t buy the standard ruger version. -
Don’t worry about what type of front sights a particular model has. If you want iron sights on your 10/22, you definitely want TSR200 Tech Sights. Don’t worry, they’re easy to install. https://www.tech-sights.com/ruger-products/
I put a Backpacker stock on my Takedown 10/22. I like it a lot. If you like the Backpacker stock, you might as well get one already installed on the model you buy. You’re still going to have to do something about the trigger, though. KIDD or Volquartsen can help.Anchors Aweigh

Probably the best backpacker/survival Rifle in the world.
I would go stainless personally. Lots of favorable reviews on YouTube worth
Watching.
Be well

Great support guys, I am tempted to buy the Ruger 10/22 with blued barrel because its in stock. I do want the stainless more tho, so maybe I’ll hold out for that.Comment

It is the perfect takedown setup. I would add the x22 barrel optic mount and a small Holosun, Sig, or Vortex red dot.

Do any of you actually put the take down in a backpack and go hiking? I would think a 22 pistol with a red dot would be almost as effective and would fit in smaller bags. Plus you can get a pistol out of a bag and into action faster than having to put the rifle together.
I've wanted a 10/22 takedown for awhile but every time I decide against it because any where I would use it, I could use a regular one.Comment

I Frankensteined one together around a used receiver I picked up, 16" threaded blued barrel, firesights, BX trigger with auto bolt release, NCStar see through pic riser (so the firesights are usable), a cheap red dot, and recently a small laser/flashlight pic rail mount.
Kinda like a Swiss army knife setup, and shoots well, spends most of the time in a Ruger soft bag (not the backpack one), perfect for travel. Bag has room for an SR22p and a few other things. The TD does fit in any old backpack as well.
I might also mention the ProMag QBD stock, if you have a regular 10/22 laying around it's a cheap way to turn it into a "takedown" style. Pretty much the same net size, you lose the 3 BX10 mags in the stock that the Magpul backpacker has.Comment

I put one together from scratch.
Original build sheet:
Back in 2012, Ruger announced the 10/22 Takedown version of the venerable Ruger 10/22 rimfire rifle. The 10/22 Takedown is a version of the 10/22 receiver that is designed for the rifle to be disas…
Final configuration after a few changes from original:

I wanted to post a minor update to the Brownells 10/22 Takedown Rifle Project since I made a few revisions since I last posted a blog article about the 10/22 Takedown. The most notable revision is …
If I were to repeat the scratch build, I would just get the Brownells non-picatinny Takedown receiver (and run the same other parts, e.g. TacSol barrel, Kidd trigger, Magpul X-22 backpacker with the front mount, etc.).

When I see videos of takedown rifles, I'm tempted to get one because they seem versatile. Aside from the 10/22, the Marlin Papoose comes to mind.
But in reality, I'm not going backpacking with it in this state. Also, I already have several takedown rifles and I never take them down.

Light bulb
It just hit me, I am going to build my own 10/22. I have never built a gun but I have rebuilt my 10/22 and am confident with building one. Thanks for the reply. With a budget of about $800, do you think I have enough to put a decent one together? Or for this money, should I just opt for a complete for now?I put one together from scratch.

'Building' a 10/22 is easier than building an AR. Buy parts, assemble, shoot. You can build a pretty nice 10/22 TD for $800. For my build, the barrel and the trigger were the most expensive items. It just hit me, I am going to build my own 10/22.
