sfvshooter, there's a big difference between the tree kind of squirrel and the ground kind. You have any sort of landscape, livestock, crops, soft irrigation lines etc and ground squirrels decide to take up residents, kiss your expendable income and more goodbye. Feed a ground squirrel if you want but your neighbor has every right to eliminate them too. Getting rid of ground squirrels shouldn't require a license

I have squirrels in my backyard, but I feed them. Started off with raw peanuts, but found out they're not good for them since they're actually legumes and not nuts. Switched to raw in shell walnuts, hazelnuts, and pecans. Also have a squirrel house back there as well.
Don't have any desire to kill anything other than something/someone that is threatening me or my loved ones. Squirrels definitely don't fall into that category.
Different types of squirrels. The CA ground squirrel is the type I want to get rid of.Comment

UTG BugBuster.
Had an AirForce Talon SS, BugBuster coupled with PVS-14, and IR illuminator. The MIL kept dog food in the shed and it produced unlimited rat traffic at night. So much fun. The neighbors never heard a single shot

I use a pellet gun for squirrels that are in trees. Shot-shells are fine for this but I do not want the liability that comes from firing bullets skyward - not knowing who they may hit on the way down.
The liability in shooting is all yours, so you should choose carefully.Comment

I knew eventually a hall monitor would surface.
OP, you can clean them out as pests without issue. If the neighbors don't know or don't care, it's all your business.
I got tired of using .22 ammo, and now trap most of them. Pellet rifle to dispatch them right in the trap.Comment

Agreed. That's the trap we use. Have had twenty + in at one time.Last summer we got more than 100 using these. Nothing else works better.

So telling someone the legality makes me a hall monitor. Some people do not care about fish & game codes.Comment

Ground squirrels are troublesome rodent pests for many home gardeners. The California ground squirrels, Otospermophilus beecheyi and Otospermophilus douglasii, are the most common species in and around homes and gardens. The two are usually not referred to as separate species, so in this publication they are referred to as “California ground squirrel” or simply “ground squirrel.” The California ground squirrel is found throughout most of California and extends south into the northwestern part of the Baja peninsula. It is also found in western Nevada and can be found north of the Columbia River in south central Washington and throughout western Oregon. The California ground squirrel can invade and colonize residential areas that have open grassy areas, sometimes causing considerable damage. Although California ground squirrel populations generally thrive where the winters are mild, there are known populations in the central Sierra Nevada Mountains at altitudes of over 7,000 feet.
Scroll down to the "legal status section". This is exactly what was explained to me by a lieutenant for F&G.
When on my own private property, as is the OP, I eradicate them In any manner I wish. He does not need a permit for ground squirrels. Other types of non-game animals do require a permit, but I wouldn't bother on my own property. YMMV.
I'm not the first to refer to you as a hall monitor.Last edited by splithoof; 05-30-2020, 7:21 PM.Comment
