Picked up my 2nd 10/22, a secondhand Ruger Custom Shop

Picked the bottom rifle up the other day and I'm interested in comparing how it groups with my first 10/22, which started life as a Tactical model with a threaded taper barrel and polymer stock.

I found it interesting as it is actually serial number 10.



Already have a nice Leupold 4-12x50 VX-Freedom scope, billet trigger and housing from Pike arms on the way. I think my game plan is to swap the Custom Shop action into the blue laminate stock as I quite like the ergonomics of it.

Nice find getting a Competition model used. I've had one since last summer and after a few problems I really like shooting it now.
When I first got it I has horrible extraction problems- or lack of to be more precise. Every 20 or so rounds a casing would not extract after firing and it would stay stuck in the chamber. a few times I could pry it out with a screwdriver but most of the time I'd have to use a rod to jam it out from the barrel end.
I figured out it was the Winchester ammo I was using. I checked the rims of the cases with a mic and a lot of them were under spec. Once I stopped using the Winchester I have not had this problem and the rifle works great. Someday I might buy an aftermarket extractor and see if I can shoot up some of this Win (I have a LOT of it). It looks pretty easy to install one from the videos I've seen.

I'm guessing the "competition" model has a tighter tolerance chamber to improve accuracy, and that may cause the case to be harder to pull out. You might be able to lightly polish the chamber, but using ammo with more consistent specs also does the trick!

It's possible that the extractor isn't getting a good enough "hook", but keep in mind that the "boom" should also be pushing the casing out, and if it's sticking, it's the relationship between the case and the chamber.

I figured out it was the Winchester ammo I was using.

The solution for thin ammo rims is to reduce the boltface counterbore to minimum headspace spec.
Then the extractor will be able to snap over the rims more reliably.

ha ha- because I have a lot of it and I was just getting started with this new 10/22 (function testing, setting up a Nikon scope). Besides- my old 10/22 shot everything so I was hoping for the same with this one.
So far the other 3 or 4 brands of ammo I've tried have been fine. I stopped buying Remington .22 several years ago and I guess I'll have to add Winchester .22 to that list as well.

The Winchester works great in my CMMG 22 conversion in my AR rig. Eats win, CCI equally.

Give it away? No way- I'll pick up a Ruger Wrangler someday and that won't mind a few cases that are a few thousands under spec.

Does the blue laminate stock have a provision for the extra rear action screw that the Comp action has? What scopes are you running on the 2 rifles now?
I have a Nikon 3-9x40 (I think) now and it looks good to me but then I've never looked through anything else. 100 yds is pretty good with it but I wouldn't mind getting a bit tighter group.

Blue stock does not have the extra rear mounting point. Hopefully that isn't a problem that will prevent me from swapping stocks. Right now the Blue Rifle has a Bushnell Trophy 3-9x40 that is actually quite nice for the money. The Competition came with a hilarious 4x Power 22 Mag Simmons. I have a Leupold 4-12x50 in the mail.

Aguila Super Extra 40gn Round Nose.

That's the same ammo I've mostly been using after giving up on the Winchester. Not one problem with it so far and very consistent. I'm getting slightly bigger groups than you but with some more practice and sorting things out I'll get there. Good luck with those 10/22's.
