    70's 10/22

So I have an early 70's my father had and I'm trying to keep it pretty much the way it was for sentimental reasons just reblueing and refinishing the stock but it was missing the sights on the barrel. Bought the ruger fiber optic ones and the rear slot seems smaller for the ones I ordered. I want to get some better iron sights at least and these don't seem to work anyone know of a good option for the older barrels?

I don't have any advice for you as far as replacement sights.

However, I do have the barrel off my vintage '71 10/22, it has a gold bead front sight and a folding rear sight, which I think were standard then. The whole fiber optic thing is a newer development.

If you end up deciding you want original PM me and we can work something out.

the dovetail slot on barrel mounted sights (front and rear) are deliberately tight so they will remain in place.

replacement sights are available from many sources

use a brass punch to seat the sights. it'll take time and effort to get them sighted in, though. .

Be sure to drift the sights properly! Removal is drift Let to Right. Installation is Right to Left...

I got an already beat up Bicentennial 10/22 years back. I left it alone except to replace the already damaged sights. I put Tech-Sights on; work better with my eyesight(for plinking I prefer irons to a scope). I can always go back to stock sights.

These ruger ones are off by 1/4 inch so definitely changed them. I might just do the tech sights.

I went the tech sights route on my 70's vintage 10/22. once installed they are easy to 'sight in'. just be sure to follow the installation instructions. they adjust like standard m16/m4 sights

              Their little tool helps too.

Also, read the instructions - depending on the length of the barrel, a "click" is not 1MOA. It is "approximately" 1MOA. That is just the nature of making sights that fit a variety of length of barrel.

Here is a vintage 10/22 I own for reference. I believe the sights to be factory original.

i too have an old 10/22 and i'm pretty sure the factory used lyman sights i think when ruger made their own they changed sizes also the early ones firing pin was not sharpened it was just flat on the front and leaves a kind of triangular impact on the case
