    Muzzle brake on M&P 15-22?

    Hey guys!

I shot my first 2 gun rimfire challenge match last month with my S&W M&P 15-22 and was having some issues with the timer picking up my shots... apparently, I wasn't the only one either and scores suffered from many shooters because of it.

My rifle does have the factory flash hider on it but I was wondering, will a muzzle brake make it louder or does the 22LR cartridge not produce enough gasses to make a difference? I'm assuming the difference in felt recoil will be negligible... not that it has a whole lot to begin with. Will any 1/2-28 thread AR muzzle brake work or is there a specific 22LR model you recommend?

I think Elmer Fudd had the same problem with his S&W M&P 15-22.

It also was vewy quiet. It went (read softly) "pew, pew" as opposed to "PEW, PEW!"

Seriously, rimfires are quiet with little recoil for a reason and I have the same problem with mine. Personally, I think your problem is a good reason to have to buy and shoot an AR9

OP can't shoot a rimfire match with an AR9..... unless there is a rimfire 9mm cartridge i never heard about?

OP, you can try to use a .223 brake but really for this, you need whoever is running the timer to adjust sensitivity or get closer to the shooter.

My bad and my apologies. I read what he wrote and my brain converted it to an Action Steel situation. Now he will need a different plausible excuse to purchase another louder rifle.

Yes, but be careful how you install it.
Many brakes come with a crush washer.
Do NOT use a crush washer on 22LR barrels.
Most 22LR barrels are made of softer steel than centerfire AR barrels.
The softer steel may stretch instead of the crush washer.

Instead, use shims and limit your torque to 15 ft-lbs or less to keep from stretching the barrel.

I found that a #6 ( 7/16 od x 5/16 id x1/16 dia.) or a # 7 rubber o-ring works just fine in place of a crush washer . package of 10 cost about $4 at home depot . easy to replace , absorbs vibration , keeps it on just fine . was suggested by the guy that made/sold me my can for my charger.

I have shot a lot of 22lr over the decades, but not in matches.

Does a muzzle brake really help a 22lr?

The folks I do know that shot for accuracy had big heavy bull barrels, not muzzle brakes.

I run custom muzzle brakes lay Mike Setting on both of my 15-22s. The brakes do reduce muzzle movement and make it louder for the timer.

The full length dust cover rail makes a world of difference in the "when I run out of bullets I'm going to beat you to death with the pistol" look that causes bad guys to run in fear, and lesser men to feel inadequate. It looks just plain beastly and the extra heft up front does help manage recoil a bit better. Plus, an angel told me that when God called JMB to heaven it was to build him a full rail 1911!

Are those the complete ultralight M&P uppers that Mike builds or just parts that you put together yourself?
