H&R MODEL 12 US

I was lucky enough to be selected to be able to buy this H&R model 12 US from the CMP back in the late 90s. For those who have never heard of them, it's a match rifle built for the US government to replace their aging Winchester Model 52 match guns. Winchester didn't want to revive their 52 line so the contract was put out to bid and H&R basically copied the 52 and came up with these (the civilian version was the model 5200) I've been trying to find out how many H&R made for the government? Can't seem to find much info on this. Anyways, it shoots stellar. Mine came with the issue Redfield Palma rear and Olympic front sights. the whole rig was new in the box....Best $265 I ever spent.

ha ha, that narrows down the numbers. Did you get yours from the CMP?

I got an assortment from the CMP back around that time too. I think they were shutting down collegiate programs and when all the loaner rifles were returned to the army they got sent to the CMP for disposal. I was able to get the Remington 40x, H&R M12, Kimber 82, Winchester 513T & 52D, and Mossberg 44 US. They sold off a lot of Remington standard velocity 22lr ammo too, by the cases, as well as match Eley ammo. Got a bunch, and still have some, of the Remington ammo. It was mylar sealed and double boxed for long term storage and sold for something like $95 a case of 5000 shipped. Those were some good times!

Yea,I really screwed up not going after the Model 52's.&40x. Was fortunate enough to go thru about 10 of the 44US to cherry pick the 2 best ones. Both were like new.One with the Layman sights ,one with the Mossberg. Ended up trading the layman gun to a buddy. 1988/89 was CMP good times

Same here, loaded up on the 52C & D, Rem 40X standard and heavy,541X, 513Ts, Kimber 82s. Most i still have not shot, lol

Going to dig to the back of the safe and take out a Remington 40X that I have a cheap Vortex scope on and play with a newish "know your limits" target I recently got. It was a cheaper one because of the cut stock, but it did come with the hardware for adjusting the length of pull. Perfect for me because my 2 sons were very young at the time and needed very short lengths of pulls anyway.

I've got several M12's and an M5200. Chief difference between the M12 and the M5200 is the 5200 came with a dark walnut stock.

Was there more of a focus on marksmanship than speed up to a few decades ago? It seems all the old gun manufacturers made rimfire bolt target rifles back through the 1900's even if mostly for training purposes in prep for centerfire shooting.

I've recently had to put a scope on my Kimber 82G because aged eyes just weren't doing justice for its accuracy with the peep sight. I'll hang on to it seeing what they go for now compared to what I paid.
