Removing Barrel Band on Ruger 10/22?

as with most mass produced "any things"...the 10/22 is a good platform to begin with. you can shrink it's groups by draining the bank account on aftermarket parts...but you'll not have the stock 10/22

You will loose accuracy.

You will also need to either sand the stock around the barrel, or buy a new stock designed to free float. Then you need to get a rear tang or make some custom pins to secure the rear end of the receiver in the stock. Otherwise the receiver and barrel will teeter totter on that one screw holding everything together.

The stock has a free-float channel.
No modifications are necessary to the action or trigger group.
There is an adjuster screw to tension the rear of the trigger group against the action screw.

Many stock 10/22s benefit from removing the barrel band and adding a piece of bicycle inner tube as a pressure point under the barrel. Cheap and easy to do, try several different placements of the pressure point, from just in front of the receiver to where the barrel band was.

To get best accuracy you want the barrel vibrating the same way each time you fire a round.
The barrel band holds the barrel against the stock to try and achieve that goal.
Unfortunately if the stock is made out if wood moisture and time will change the amount of pressure the barrel see's.
If you remove the band you need to make sure none of the barrel slaps the wood upon firing or touches it anywhere along the channel.
Hog it out really well because the 10/22 isn't threaded into the receiver. It has a slip fit into the receiver then you tighten down a couple socket head capscrews.
It holds the barrel but it is still a slip fit so there is always the possibility of it shifting in you. Most of the custom aftermarket clones solve that issue by threading the barrel.

I wasn't going to name names, but that's one of the best systems I've seen in years!

I made lengthened trigger group pins that go through the sides of the stock, but that is just so much nicer. Anyway that I can skip bedding is always preferred.

What really makes a 10/22 more accurate is a bucket full of aftermarket parts.

Exactly, why not just buy a better rifle that is of stock configuration?

Dump $$ into a 10/22 and in the end you still have a 10/22 worth the same.

FYI the barrel most likely touches the stock in a number of places so simply pulling the barrel band off will likely not do much towards improved accuracy and is only a first step to floating the barrel.
