Recently while cleaning my gun I discovered the screws were loose on the top strap. If I had not discovered this and gone to the range,what kind of problems was I heading for?

Fail to fire, fail to reset the sear, and failure to extract are a few. The back of the slide rides up when in battery if the screws are loose, making for weak firing pin hits and fails to depress the trigger dis-connector.
Take the screws out and clean them and the threads in the receiver with alcohol or some other degreaser.
Buy some Loctite 222, it's light duty thread locker.
Put a tiny amount on the screw threads and seat them snugly, do not over tighten. They will stay put but still be easily removable when needed.
I don't like disassembling mine for cleaning because I have an optic mounted.
I stick to One Shot cleaner and dry lube spray to clean the barrel and breech face, then TW-25 grease on the slide rails.
Oil is terrible for lubing semi-auto's because the blow-back residue mixes with the oil, creating mud.
I use a bore snake for the barrel.

Replacong the lock washers is important, too.
After a few uses they get flattened out and no longer provide any grip to hold the screws.

So OP, now that you have received some honest and appropriate responses to your question, here were my first thoughts to your question:

1) is this the first time you have been accused of having a screw loose?

2) who puts screws in the top of their J-strap to hold it on?

3) stop cleaning your gun and you won't find these annoying problems

4) stop going to the range. This kind of activity can only cost you money and and aggregation.

I have a screwdriver with the proper bit installed with me at the range.
I check the screw for tightness during my shooting session and tighten as needed, not a big deal.

Clean both surfaces, apply blue Loctite.

I read this post today very shortly after returning from the range after a frustrating session with my Buck Mark. It would work OK for 8 or 10 rounds and then not cock the firing pin and therefore not fire even though it would feed rounds from the mag, all the symptoms described by 'old shooter above. Sure enough, the top strap screws were loose. A little blue Loctite was applied, the screws were tightened and now I look forward to its return to perfect and very accurate performance.

PS--I really do have a loose screw, one of nine attaching a plate to my big toe to keep it from falling off due to a ruptured tendon. But the doc says it will tighten up as bone grows around it.
