#UPDATE# post 16 SHOT PATTERN, HUNTING DRAGON FLIES

I saw the recent post of Henry coming out with a smooth bore rifle and it inspired me to drag out my Winchester model 67 smooth bore 22.
I'd never really checked what the shot pattern was like so I took a target and a box of Federal 22 shot shells to the back yard to find out.
So to share with you some pictures
After shooting the pictures I noticed a lot of dragon flies flying around our backyard and had a lot of fun using the rest of the box of shells trying to kill a few insect clays.
P.S. I live in the country with lots of distance to any neighbors.
It's hilariously fun,never got a one of those jinky guys

Try some 12g high pattern BB and you'll bag one, or vaporize it...... something like that.

You're right I knew with my skills I would probably never hit one, especially after watching the way they fly.

Shoot flies or Yellow Jackets. The Dragonflies are the good guys.

No Dragon Flies were harmed in this experiment.
I never had a chance
Maybe a few were scared.
It's not worth it to try again and waste a box of ammo
I did find they will break a stationary clay at 12 yards.

I've thought about picking something like this up and shooting grasshoppers. We get a ton of them at the family ranch. I bet it'd help with bird/clay shooting reaction times!

Interesting story.
I've been fascinated by dragonflies my self for years. I guess I was tempted to try the impossible, they have millions of years of flying skills both aggressive and defensive that can't be beat.
They are safe from me forever.

Good question, I'll have to drag out my Dad's Model 67 standard with rifling and do a comparison.
From what I've read the rifling spins the shot spreading the pattern.
Stand by we will see.

Nearly 70 years ago, when I was a lad, I had a Sears-branded BB gun, made by Daisy, that was dead-on accurate and spent much of one summer in my uncle's grapefruit orchard in the Imperial Valley shooting dragon flies on the wing. You had to wait until they were hovering to make a shot. I tallied just under 100 that summer and, I would say, really learned how to shoot accurately without aiming, just by reflex and instinct, or what we would call point-and-shoot today.
