Walter p22 rim fire

I've had a P22 standard model for >10 years. Many threads about it, most mention they need HV ammo to cycle and are picky about which ammo feeds and ejects reliably. I like it because its my most compact semi-auto and has the fitted Walther laser.
I had to look up P22 with compensator. I see its a faux compensator just for looks. A 22LR doesn't have enough recoil to warrant a compensator but since the longer barrel version has the added sight block on the end of the barrel I guess why not jazz it up.
I'd caution that for the "target barrel' model the rear sight is mounted on the slide and the front sight on the barrel. If that compensator comes even slightly loose then there goes your sight alignment. Having front and rear sight on two different pieces and one them moves isn't very common in gun design. -
I have a newer p22 in OD green, its maybe a year old. The gun eats everything, copper plated, lead nose, HP. I think the newer guns are way better than the older models. My friend has a first edition and that think cant go bang to save its life!"Better to be judged by twelve than carried by six"

Emphasis mine. The other problem with the extended barrel is that you're stuck with the sight on the compensator, you can't change it. I have a green FO sight on my P22 and really like it; I have an extended barrel and comp set in the box still untouched. Doesn't help that to get it on you have to break the loctite on the barrel thread protector so you can install it. I have had a P22 forever... even had to send in a CA model because it was magically transforming in to a threaded barrel assault .22 or some tish around 2001 or whatever. So mine is safe and sane now legal-like. It has always been the worst. Even after it is kind of reliable, it is not a great gun. Picked last of all my .22's and I have a boat load.Comment

I've had two, they always shot fine for me as long as you were using CCI hi velocity ammo.
I sold them off because I wasn't enamored of the toy-like dimensions or the zinc slide. I wanted a gun that I *knew* would last forever, so I went and got a Ruger 22/45."Two dead?!? HOW?!?"

To the OP: Find another pistol. The only redeeming quality about the pistol is the grip, which is great for small handed shooters. The comp is worthless (fake) and the compensator sight is garbage. The after market FO sight is a must but the shallow rear sight notch is sub standard and makes accuracy an issue. The trigger is TERRIBLE and there is little you can do about it. Removing the LCI & magazine disco helped a little, but not much. It took me almost 2 hours of polishing the internals and slide (garbage pot metal) to get this one to run subsonic ammo. It now eats anything but is still a cheaply made pistol.
My advice would be save up for something better.

If you want something fun with a pot metal slide, get a GSG929CA... nice gun for the $$ but it is not double action / single action if that was something you look for. Awesome 1911 trigger though. The P22 has a horrible DA pull IMHO. Mine shoots reliably with two kinds of ammo, but it is not a real fun gun. 922CA is way more fun and so is a Glock AA conversion... those kind of give you the same super light recoil .22 trainer feel. Buckmarks are the real .22 pistols that are still on-roster.Comment

Remember that it’s not even a Walther, it’s a Umarex with the Walther logo slapped on it, same as the PK380.
Cheaply made with a pot metal slide and terrible trigger and sights. The only thing it has going for it is how the grip feels in the hand to some people.
Plenty of other great .22 options out there, either purpose made or conversion kits for other handguns.Comment

Oh yeah? What's the difference? Does the non CA version not have a mag safety?
I've heard plenty of people out of state say the P22 sucks because it is picky with ammo or the slides split or the trigger sucks or the sights suck or the quality sucks or the magazines suck, etc...
I think my P22 was before there was a real CA version, hence the threaded barrel it originally came with. They might be better now, but the Buckmark and GSG's are better guns IMHO. I wish I could get a Ruger or M&P.
I could see kids liking the P22 though.Last edited by crufflers; 07-30-2019, 10:53 AM.Comment

I have a new generation long slide (the one with the comp) and an original short slide P22 CA from 10-whatever years ago. Both have been very reliable, no drama with either with most ammo (typically Fed Bulk pack). I use them as my transition guns from airsoft to "real" guns with the kids/new shooters I take to the range.
Everybody I know with a P22 has not had any of the "drama" I hear about online with theirs either.
(Edit to add) The non CA version does have a magazine safety.

Makes an easy transition to a P99...

I have the p22ca. It is the only gun I actually regret buying. I've tried every fix. Every upgrade. Followed the P22 bible recommendations. It still will only run CCI mini mags reliably and only when the gun is freshly cleaned and lubed. I have tried just about every manufacturer of ammo. I've sent it back to factory only for them to test fire it only with CCI mini mags (the only brand they test fire with) only tell me all is well.
I would sell it but I would feel bad about selling an unreliable gun.
