survival 22 rifle, what is yours.

I've been thinking about buying one, but what is the best? I was watching survivorman were the survivorman and his brother were in the wilderness, sirvivorman had brought a browning 12 ga. and planned to set snars. His brother brought a new 22 bolt action rifle. It looked like a chipmunk or some kind of youth model 22. Well long story short, they survived for three days on squirrels shot all with the 22. I was wondering what you guys would use? I have a old T/C .22 with a 10'' barrel and a scope, but I can't seem to hold it steady enough.

Marlin 795. That thing has never done me wrong though I have an old 18 shot tube fed marlin with a 20" barrel that I'd probably take instead. A little heavy, but great gun.

I have an AR-7, but I would probably just go with a Buckmark or Mk2 or 3 with a scope on it. Or a Ruger Charger but I don't think we can have them here in Cali.

What you should do is ... sell me your T/C! Kidding!

What's the scope magnification? If it's too high, every little jiggle will drive you crazy. Try shooting the T/C in a sitting position. The Sniper International Competition showed a couple of the Snipers sitting with their Beretta wedge at their knees. I had never seen that before. This method steadied their aim after running. I couldn't find that pic, it's on my DVR, though.


Try using a sling to create some stability.

It seems like a shame that you wouldn't use a T/C as a survival gun. I think it would be perfect - small, compact, multiple caliber conversion - it doesn't matter if it's a single shot. If you missed a squirrel on the first shot, you're not going to have a follow up shot in any case. I have a Marlin lever action .22 and a Ruger 10/22 w/ folding stock. Either one would be perfect for a survival gun. I would rather have something with a bigger caliber but roasted squirrel is fine with a .22LR.

If I wanted something light that I'd have to carry for a while with other survival gear, I'd go for a Ruger MkII or Buckmark.

For fun survival where the extra weight and bulk doesn't matter, any of the take-down rifles are a good bet, and an O/U like the M6 or Savage 24C is as flexible as it gets.

It's too bad the AR7 is such a POS, or it'd be nearly perfect.

Here's my Savage 24C O/U - .22 and 20 gauge. Between the .22 and the 20G with bird, buck, and slugs, you'd be ready for 98% of what you'd need a survival gun for. It also stores a small amount of ammo in the buttstock. You can also get barrel inserts that let you shoot a number of centerfire pistol calibers out of the shotgun barrel.

The downsides are that it's relatively heavy and bulky. It's really a fun camping gun, not a serious survival gun.

Since my Spike's .22 AR is having FTE issues right now , I'd use my H&K Mod 300 WMR .

Agree with maxicon regards the AR-7. Great concept but I had one in the 70s that was a total POS. Jammed, jammed and jammed! An O.K. single shot that you could pack into the buttstock and toss in the backpack or back of the boat. James Bond (Sean Connery) used one in one of his early movies!
