    Best Coverted 1-7 .22lr Ammo

I picked a CMMG .22lr conversion I picked up for just over $100 on sale a while back/ I then put it on a "spare parts lower" with my first AR upper (1-7 twist) I bought from PSA years ago. I did replace the plastic guard with an inexpensive aluminum one and removed the front sight/gas block as well at the same time.

When it comes to shooting, it functions flawlessly, even with no spring or buffer in it. Accuracy though "acceptable" I suppose for a .22lr conversion, maybe even slightly better. I was getting 1-2" groups at best at 50 yards with the Winchester 36gr bulk pack shooting the best. But the 1-7 twist is obvious not as friendly as the usual 1-16 twist.

A few weeks ago I had an idea. After playing with lead free for years now as well as reading up on subsonic rounds I realized that longer, heavier, slower bullets need a faster twist to stabilize. So I decided I would try the Aguila 60gr subsonic rounds after reading that they recommend a 1-9 twist or faster. I just wasn't sure if they would cycle too. So i bought a box to try.

Wel. I had to wait a few weeks for the rain to stop, but I finally got out last Sunday. Long story short, It works!!! Not only does it cycle, but at 25 yards I was putting them in the same hole. At 50 yards I was holding well under 1' groups, closer to 1/2"! Oh, and that is with a 4MOA red dot Vortex Strikefire. I didn't get the chance to try 100 yards because I twisted my ankle and darn near broke it, but I will try again later. I considered scoping it, but I really just wanted a short(er) range fun gun, but one that hits where I point it. And sorry about no target pics. I was more concerned about how I was going to drive 125 miles home alone barely being able to push a brake or throttle.

If you have a non-dedicated upper with a .22lr conversion I would suggest giving them a try. They are not cheap, but the nice part is that I can use standard .22lr if I just want to fling lead with relative accuracy and use this if I get serious without changing anything. It will make a great jackrabbit jumpshooting rig this spring.
