Thinking about buying one, to be used for shooting at paper 25 to 50 yards.

I shoot cz s , just thought I would like to try a semi auto

I've got one and love it.
No complaints and would recommend it.
It's a nice lightweight rifle.

A Ruger 10/22 would also be a good choice.

I have one. It's fun.

I have a few 10/22s & only bought the S&W because Turners had 'em dirt cheap.

If I could only own one, between the M&P & 10/22 I would take the 10/22.

I have two. Both are reliable plinkers, easy for the grandkids to shoot, and go bang just fine. I rarely shoot them, as I prefer more accuracy than they exhibit. Then again, I don't even own a completely Ruger 10/22 for the same reason.
For a bargain paper puncher, look for a older Marlin 60. They tend to be very accurate, reliable, and can often be found in near-new condition for ~$150. Sometimes less. And they are not nearly as prone to upgrade-itis - you won't spend hundreds of dollars changing out all the parts!
