Just went to Turner's to get the Marlin outta' jail. The guy takes it out of the box, pulls it out of the bag, looks down the sights and hands it to me.

I look down the sights and hand it back to him. "Hey, is it just me or does that rear sight look crooked?"

It was just enough to be noticeable. (Evidently more noticable to the guy buying the gun than the one selling it, go figure.) So he hands it to a couple of the other guys, one of whom is presumably his supervisor, or maybe the manager, cuz' he sorta' took the whole matter over.

So he checks to see if either of the two they have in the store are "un-DROS'd", both spoken for. He then calls the warehouse and orders one to be sent down on the next truck. So the longest 10 days known to man, is now 16 days. AAAAGGHHH!!! Whatever, this 10-day wasn't that bad, probably cuz' I already have guns and I have no plans to go shooting for a couple of weeks.

While I was waiting for them to locate another gun, I had grabbed a spare magazine to buy. ($18.00) The guy took it from me and walked away, he came back and handed me my paperwork with the new serial # and a little invoice to take to the counter adn says your magazine is taken care of for your trouble.

I wanted to post this because Turner's often gets a bad rap but I have always been treated pretty well there. (Kearney Mesa is the only one I have done business with)

They didn't try to tell me the gun was fine, they're bringing a new one in for me, and they made a gesture to compensate me for my trouble without me asking them to. Maybe the other stores are worse, or it's a case of being treated as you treat others, or I don't ask a lot of stupid questions (that's probably not it) I don't know, but they stepped up and are taking care of it.

Should I clean mine now? It's been a few months, and a few thousand rounds.

I'm a little on the Armourer side...I clean the action after every range visit.
I tend to leave the barrel alone until precision drops off.

Go until it stops functioning reliably, then prepare for a good cleaning.

Are these safe to dry fire? I don't wanna ding up the barrel.

It seems like the magazine disconnect could be fixed with a well placed pin, anyone easily try this?

I would not worry about dinging up the barrel it is the firing pin that will get messed up. As someone said get the little blue dummy rounds for dry firing.

2 - Having shot about 150 rounds, I had several FTE's with the ejecting cartridge getting squeezed in the action. About 1 in 30 rounds. Happend with both kinds of ammo used.

Will the rifle get better after cleaning-lubing and a bit more use ? Or should I find different ammo that ejects better ?

Did you clean it before the first shoot? I found mine to be very gritty inside when I took it apart before the first time out. I've also noticed that the residue from the .22 powder tends to soak up the oil. If it starts to get dry just put a drop of oil each side of the breech block. The first 2 times out I was having some failures. They would fire, eject, but it would not come quite far back enough to grab the next round. I stored it with the action locked back to break in the spring and used a little more oil and it's been perfect since. Last 1k rounds using Federal and Winchester only had some duds, no FTE's.

Out of the box Marlin 795 with Federal Bulk 745 and American Eagle AE22

Just got a brand new 795. Installed my old Bushnell 3-9x, sighted it, and got theses results @ 50 YDS :



Before trying the 795, I was certain that it could not do better than my older 22" barrel rimfirme.

Now I can see that with the right ammo, the 795 can do just great.
And that's out-of-the box.

I would have tried other ammo, but the only two good candidates (cop.plated + velocity 1200-1300 fps, etc) I found are both Federal-made and allmost (or exactly) identical.

Federal champion 745, bulk value pack (525)
36gr. hp, 1280 fps, cop. plated

American eagle AE22 (federal), box of 40
38 gr. hp, 1260 fps, copper plated


For those who might know... I have a few QUESTIONS :

1 - Why did the AE ammo outclass the Fedral Bulk ? Is it because the Walmart fed bulk box may be OLD, or just beacuase bulk ammo is made of rejects ? Or is it the 2Gr. difference between the tow (hard to beleive). Or is it plainly because bulk cartridges get bumped against each other and develop bumps/scratches,etc...

I think my Fed-bulk ammo may be older, because it's 1280 fps on the box, but current ammo (Federal website and ballistics sotware 2009 and 2010) report 1260 fps.

P.S.: I had a brick of Remington Target Ammo that I did not DARE put in my 795. But those shoot great (but dirty as hell) in my old Mossberg 350KA.

In the Con's you list Plastic Hammer???
Mine made last year has a metal one...what's your two first numbers in the serial# ??

The first two digits are 9 then 1. The hammer is definitely plastic, albeit rather thick and strong plastic. I think it'll hold up, if not I think a metal replacement wouldn't be that hard to find/make.

Well I shot about 200 rounds through my new 795 today. The only ammo I had the opportunity to shoot it with was high velocity Federal 36 grain, from a 550 round bulk pack. I only had one failure of any kind. It was a FTE in the second magazine. Seeing as the failure was early on, I'll chalk it up to the gun needing to be broken in still. The precision was quite good, on average I was shooting ~1.5" at 50yds. This was prone and supported with irons. I believe the gun is capable of being much more precise. The two restricting factors seemed to be the trigger an sights. The trigger is a on the heavy side. While I'm just not good enough with the guns irons to shoot much better. So over all I'm quite happy. All this gun needs to be in my opinion is minute of squirrel head, so I think it met and exceeded that criteria.

I figured out how to remove the annoying magazine disconnect. It turns out that there is a tab(circled in red) that holds down the "trigger linkage"(circled in green). All that needs to be done is bend the tab upward with a pair of pliers. The tab should be bent till the "trigger linkage" is allowed to rise freely when the magazine disconnect is in the downward position(the position that it's in with no magazine inserted.). With this 5min fix my 795 was able to fire without a magazine inserted, the way it was meant to be!

I try to avoid dry firing any more than neccesary, the LSHO prevents 99% of it

Use blue snap-cap rounds or plastic wall-anchors for dry-firing

Some folks have killed the mag-safety, but I feel it has it's uses...

Also, sometimes you need to remove a little material in the stock for a little more room to operate the LSHO lever...keeps grit from jamming it when you've fired 500 rounds in a sitting

I just picked up one of these little carbines. I haven't shot it yet, however it seems like a dandy little rifle.

Dual extractors(why doesn't every .22lr have these?)

Light weight

Simple to field strip(sadly it isn't tool-less)

Made in the USA


Con's:

Plastic hammer (to give it Marlin credit this part seems pretty beefy)

Has a magazine disconnect (seriously **** these things!)

They didn't clean up the inside of the bolt (a bit of Brasso could easily fix this)


Over all:

Most certainly worth the $150 I paid, I'll report back with how it shoots tomorrow!
