O damn. I'm gonna go to Big5 and check out both of these weapons before I buy it, but I really want a Marlin now!

For those interested, Big 5 (at least the one on Tully in San Jose) had three Marlins on sale for $159. Picked up two of them so theres one left.

Great now by the time I get there tonight they will all be gone.

Hopefully one will still be there if not I can try the other Big5 stores in the San Jose area. Thanks for sharing the information.

You should have gone to Turner's the other day and bought 'em------you would have saved yourself fifty bucks......

Would have spent more than 50 bucks driving down to southern CA and back twice. Turners is socal only.

I own both the marlin 795 and ruger 10/22 in stainless. Had the marlin for about 2 years and it was my first 22 ever, and few months ago decided to buy a 10/22 as well. So first off, marlin out of the box was without any doubt more accurate and had swivel studs already in place, unlike the 10/22, which was no biggy because i was changing out the 10/22 stock anyway. For the marlin, i bought a bushnell 3-9 scope, and wish i had gotten the 4-12, and a dragunov ati stock, which by the way does not fit it without very careful work with a dremel. Not just for the magazine, but for the whole trigger assembly. Very much recommend the ati stock, light and so easy to shoot. Only bad thing is the cheek piece is way too low and can't rest on it when using the scope. Ok, for the 10/22, i had to invest in a volquartsen hammer, adjustable v block, and a few other things to get the accuracy up because it was a big disappointment at first, but now it shoots circles around the marlin. Well no thats not good lol. It shoots straight where i want it too, and the marlin shoots circles around it overall, marlin plus ati stock plus scope was about 300. The ruger 10/22 with ati strikeforce folding stock, many internals, centerpoint 4-16 scope, bipod, and few other little things came out to about 750. The ruger 10/22 magazine is way more reliable than the marlin, without a single jam so far with about 3k shots through the ruger. I've done about 10k through the marlin and probably one in every 100 jams. Last thing, the centerpoint scope on the ruger is the best value for money i could have imagined, and will be buying more for sure. A little heavy but very very very good...

Better in regards to adding a scope, no. I just don't see the point in paying more for something that does pretty much the same job. The marlin costs less than the ruger.

However, the one major gripe I have, is the stock. I'm 6'6", it's not that the marlin stock is unusuable or something, but it is a bit on the small side(I don't think the 10/22 is much better), so keep in mind that the available aftermarket stock selection for the marlin is limited compared to the 10/22(boyd's is almost sold out of their limited run of marlin stocks). Of course this a decision you can make on your own by shouldering both of them in the store.

YEP!
The Marlin is going to be hands down more accurate out of the box then the 10/22. It is going to be less expensive because you don't have to spend money to fix the bolt hold open/release, buy a custom barrel to make it accurate and the single stack mags are alot easier to handle then the rotary mags too. There is a 25 round mag being released by Shooters Ridge sometime in April/May(depending on who you believe). The Marlin has sling studs from the get go(most 10/22 don't, another add on) allowing you to use either a sling or bipod with little trouble. I could go on and on, but the Marlin 795 is the better rifle between the two. I should know, I used to own a 10/22.

I got the marlin because while there is lots of crap to bolt to a 10/22, I don't really like the 10/22 magazines and I wasn't interested in dressing up a .22lr rifle as something that it wasn't(doesn't mean I won't pick up a 10/22 and tommy gun kit some day, but it's just not what I was interested in), so I didn't see the point in paying more for the ruger.

Hey guys,

I'm thinking about a 22. My friends recommend the Ruger 10/22 but I also see people talking about Marlins. For those who were about to get the Ruger but decided to get the Marlin, why'd you guys do it? And for those who own both, which one do you prefer?

After hearing all the great reviews, plus Turners sale price I went ahead and made the jump. Unfortunately, there out of stock...so it looks like I'll be playing the waiting game for a while, bummer.
