    Beginner to a Ruger 10/22

So, I just bought a Ruger 10/22 for me and my son, wood stock, I liked the classic look.

I ordered a few extra Mags. Doing to poking around I'm reading that a few good starter mods are the Volquartsen Automatic Bolt Release, and the Volquarsten Bolt Tune-Up Kit for Ruger 10/22.

    Any recommendations other than those?

Just do the auto bolt release and a delrin bolt buffer, save the rest of your funds for ammo. Just get out there and shoot it with him, later you can mod it out.

My plan is to take it out with him before any mods, When I do mods. I like to feel/see a difference.

I suggest you take it out shooting in stock form and begin the loathing of the factory bolt release. You can buy a Volquartzen release or do the 2 minute job yourself with a small file. Its super easy, I've done it myself and for other people, its my only mod on my 10/22's.

Besides the auto bolt release I think it's g2g as is. Spending 50 or more for a trigger on a 200 dollar gun seems silly to me.

              BX trigger....

Is well worth the money.... Shoot it awhle, get usd to its feel ... Only then will you feel the difference... IMHO.

I second the buffer pin upgrade. Did the bolt release myself with a Dremel, it's not hard to do.

Go out and shoot it, you might like the way it shoots and not need any upgrades or decide to do others.

The Ruger 10-22s are fine guns right off the shelf. Get out and shoot them a bunch to get their feel, that way you can tell if there are benefits to the mods you may install later.

Having a few extra mags is nice...I like the clear ones from Ruger.

Buy a range of ammo types and see what groups the best.

I have one that's been heavily but relatively inexpensively modified. My two favorite upgrades are an ER Shaw bull barrel and the BX trigger. I wouldn't pay $80 or $90 for the trigger but there are a lot of sales right now so you should be able to find one for $45-50.

After all the upgrades, I'm left needing one that's completely stock again. Also, Turner's has ammo for under $.03/round right now (Federal Black Box). It might be a good time to pick up a couple cases if you haven't already. Enjoy the time with your son!

Do the bolt release mod on your part for free and install a Volquartson extractor and your 10/22 will run fine forever.

I also prefer the carbine barrel band stock of my old 10/22.

Great gun off the shelf. Never felt the need or want for an auto bolt release. Although I have a ton of upgrades, I felt the biggest difference with the kidd viton bolt buffer and the stainless guide rod and charging handle. Both are cheap parts. The bolt buffer had a drastic impact on the audible note of the recoil. I shoot alone, not at a range so its something I really appreciate. The stainless guide rod took the grit out of the charging action. The great thing about the 10/22 is most upgrades are pretty cheap. The bx trigger is nice but I didn't really mind the stock trigger. The x22 is also a great upgrade just because it looks really cool
