    10/22 youth stock?

    i'm waiting to pick up my ruger 10/22 and wanted to know if i could replace the stock with a smaller one for when i eventually take my kids out. couple ideas off the top of my head:
    • synthetic stock in youth size
    • pseudo-tactical style with telescoping stock (this may have the added benefit of having replaceable grips). this is a slippery slope costwise i think. it would probably be cheaper to just buy a youth size 22.
    • find someone who no longer wants their original wood stock and simply cut it down. the variable there is that i don't know if the wood stocks are hollow or not. if i do cut it down, will it leave an open cavity that can be covered with a pad?

    Sure, there's a lot of options. The 10/22 compact comes with a shorter length of pull. You could get an aftermarket youth 10/22 stock (a quick Google search shows one on Brownells for $80). Or you could get something adjustable like the Hunter X22 and just change the number of spacers between you and your kids.

    10/22s are versatile and insanely customizeable. If you end up enjoying the platform you'll sink a lot more money than just for a new stock. You'll also probably end up with more than one anyway if your kids like it.

      Cousineau Wood Products was into making stocks for a while, but their main business is supplying wood laminates. To the point, they have a 10-22 compact stock for $20, if you can handle pink. The quality is good, the price is they want to sell them off asap. Lot's of us over at Rim Fire Central are happy with them.

        Takeoff wood stocks are in the classifieds often, pretty cheap, I picked up one to cut short for my niece & nephews.

          I bought a couple of compact stocks on ebay for a low price. I installed them on the 10-22s that my daughter and wife use. I believe the compact stock has a couple different features, it does not need a barrel band with diminishes accuracy, and I believe the grip is closer to the trigger than a regular stock (not 100% sure about this). I am 6'3" and the compact stock is not too short for me to use.

            The shipping cost is higher than the purchase price.

              Tapco 10/22 stocks are $75-80 and can be used by adults and kids.

                The wood 10/22 stocks are solid, no cavity...

                These can be found at Big 5, use coupons to get the price down;

                  I'll vouch for the Axion polymer stock with AR carbine style rear stock. Very adaptive to youth and adult shooters.

                    If wife and/or kids want to shoot, start putting $ away for a 2nd 10/22.
