10/22 Barrel Length for SPECIFICALLY SUPERSONIC Only.

What's the optimum 10/22 barrel length for supersonic rounds exclusively. I'm well aware subs are better.

I guess you mean maximum velocity?

      about 22"

For those that have not followed this, a CZ452 was the basis for the test. Velocity was measured at the factory 24.25" barrel, cut off an inch and shot again. The numbers to the right of the velocity is the 5 shot group at 50yds and 100 yds. The barrel is at 17.25" long now. posted Feb 25...

Are you asking what barrel length allows maximum velocity?
I have a bunch of chrono data from centerfire calibers but haven't done much with 22LR. I may have to collect some data. I've got barrels from 3.5" to 26". Not sure how much bullet weight and ammo brand will matter.

          Very interesting info here.
Sometimes a longer barrel does not mean more velocity.
It really seems to depend on the exact ammo and barrel used.

From the link, the barrel itself, not only the length, makes a difference.

Ammo CCI 27 gr. CPHP fired in guns, not a test barrel:

              Winchester Model 63
              23" barrel
              1031

              Kimber Classic
              22" barrel
              1141

              Ruger 10/22
              18.5" barrel
              1102

              Ruger Mk 2
              10" barrel
              1102

I really like ballistics by the inch, but I'm sad it's not good data. They only do a 3 shot average. I'd like to see at least a 20 shot average to consider it useful. They admit that their data is flawed.
The data is as it was collected. There are glitches here and there. Might be due to a poor re-crowning. Might be due to a malfunctioning piece of equipment. Rather than fudge things to make the numbers all nice and tidy, we put the actual data out there, warts and all.

This brings up a good point.
If it goes supersonic before leaving the barrel, it should be just as accurate as subsonic until it makes the jump back to subsonic.
It may even keep better accuracy while in supersonic as the drop will be less previlant.

I'm actually hoping for a long barrel to slow supers down to subsonic before leaving the barrel. Looks like that ain't happening, as they seem to stay around the transonic zone, which is bad. I might as well stick with a cheap 16" bull and just invest in subsonic ammo. I read BBTI prior to asking this and suspected as much, but the data from AccurateShooter cemented it.

                      50" maybe?

2 to 3 inches should do the trick, even with hyper velocity.

Is the purpose of slowing down ss 22 and getting it to sound like a subsonic???
My 10/22 cycles subsonic reliably only after I put the bolt on a strict weight loss program and changed recoil spring to a lighter one.
Going back to hv ammo is not a problem.

                            Works for shotguns.

No. It's to avoid the bullet passing through the transonic region, which reduces accuracy. Looks like none of the barrel lengths even out to 24" can do it reliably, so it seems pointless.
