    The rim diameter is different also case configuraaion different. May or may not eject. Case will be expanded sometimes into fragments. Why not put .223 in . 308 and see if it fires. Firearms are almost always cartridge specific.

        22LR is a heeled bullet. The case is the same diameter as the bullet. The bullet is neck down at the base (heeled) to fit inside the case.

        The 22 mag case is 22 caliber + the case thickness. Not just the rim diameter is larger, the whole case diameter is larger.

        A 22LR would flop around in a 22 mag chamber.

        If you were somehow successful at making enough impact to fire, I'd think a lot of gas would leak around the case into the action as it wouldn't come close to sealing before the case case failure.

          While I have seen it done successfully, it is not considered safe to do so. As mentioned above, the cases are slightly different diameters, among other things...

                ^^ Except .308 and 30/06 have same base diameter. Will fire and may fireform or may split apart. Apples and oranges
