I have been kicking around the idea of getting my kid a Savage mark I youth rifle because he likes shooting mine but its way too big for him. I started out with an Iver Johnson Lil Champ plunger bolt when I was 5 but not sure if my kid can keep tugging on that thing for a full days shooting. I'd rather not get a magazine fed bolt action for his first gun simply to get him used to one bullet at a time and taking his time on his shots, that and he won't chew through ammo so fast. So what is a decent gun under $250?

And I looked, and behold a pale horse and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him.

Plenty of old Remington single shot
22s cluttering up store shelves where I am at.
You could also let him use a mag fed bolt gun, and just take away the mag until he is ready. He can place one in the chamber by hand.

This is what I picked up for my kids. Single shot, simple (if not a bit cheap) sights, easy to use. Allows them to work on the basics, slow things down, and not blow through a bunch of ammo. Good first rifle.Comment

Savage Rascal. Single shot bolt action, no plunger and it has a spring loaded feed ramp. They come with a peep sight but are drilled and tapped for a scope if desired. They are head and shoulders above the Cricket for a little more money. Prices seem to vary depending on color...$145 up to about $200 for wood stock.Last edited by driveljay; 12-06-2017, 6:56 AM.Comment

My first gun was a Ithica model 49 single shot, got it for my 8th birthday. You learn to make each shot count with a single shot rifle.sigpicComment

Bought my son a CZ542 Scout from a shop that was closing. Good little .22, as it came with a dummy mag, so, a one round shooter. He's out grown it now. Still in my safe. But, a single shot .22 is great to have them learn on, so, you're leaning in the right direction.Comment

I started my son off on an old Stevens falling block single shot. Then moved to his Grandfathers Mossberg 142, loading it single.
When he started 4H shoot program, they had a few bolt actions with a blank magazine so they were fed single, or had option for a 5 round mag.
One of the 4H instructors had one of these; it was nice single shot, with 22, 243, and 20g barrels.

I saw the Savage Rascal but I'm not liking that sight. I think what I will do is take him to pit local shops, have him fondle a couple guns and see what fits him. I'd also like a gun that will last the test of time so he might pass it on to his kids. That Iver Johnson I had, I've spent $160 on a $20 gun, trying to get it to work again. Yeah I still have my first gun but it's a wall hanger now. I'd like for him to be able to shoot it with his kids. I really appreciate the information and perspectives.sigpic

My first gun was a model 49 too!
Out of all the little, short LOP, SS .22lrs, I like the Rascal the best. I love the peep sights that come on it. In fact, I don't even have any kids of my own but, I just bought a Rascal on Black Friday to use to teach with. I choose it over Chipmunks and the Henry mini bolt youth because of the trigger and awesome sights. If you don't like peep sights, look at one of the other two I just mentioned.I saw the Savage Rascal but I'm not liking that sight. I’ve been considering the Henry Mini Bolt for my daughter. Looks like a great rifle with a lot of features.Comment
