    Semiauto .22lr

I have a Savage Mkii that I'm quite pleased with but I'm sorta lusting after a semiauto .22lr for squirrel (sage rat) hunting.

I've shot a friend's 10/22 takedown but I'm not excited about a rifle that comes apart.

I'm aware of the Marlins and another Calgunner has a Winchester 190 for sale.

CZs seem to be popular but I'm not sure they make a semiauto in .22lr

With the Savage I can consistently knock spent shotgun shells off a board at 35 yards using Aguila standard velocity ammunition. That's the kind of accuracy I'd be looking for in a semiauto. Price wise I'd like to keep the total cost of scope and rifle below around $500.

I'd be interested in any thoughts about the options I'm aware of and learn about options I'm not aware of.

    How about a regular 10-22?
The takedown 10-22s have had comments about lower accuracy here.

Extra money for a better scope.

35 yards should not be too tough.

Good luck and let us know what you get.

      My two .22lr semi-autos.
The 10/22 is bedded, floated, and has a Kidd trigger.
The black one now has rear flip-up BUIS co-witnessed with a red dot.
      Both will kill squirrels.

In addition to a regular 10/22 you could go with a Marlin 795 (magazine) or Marlin 60 (tube fed). Any of those should give you the accuracy you are looking for. The CZ 512 is a semiauto but it will go over $500 when you add the scope.

          Semiauto .22lr

i started with a marlin 795, which is fine lightweight plinker for about $100 new after sale price and rebates, and later got a marlin papoose takedown. then i got a ruger 10/22 and the marlins started to collect dust. if i were to start over, to play around with and customize a 22lr rifle, i would go with a ruger 10/22.

all that said, during the great 22lr famine i stumbled onto a pristine used, stainless, scoped marlin bolt action rifle 17hmr for $150. wow! if i were after squirrels or gophers i would jump at a 17hmr.

Find a cheap non-takedown 10/22. Shoot it and find out what you like and don't like. Start replacing parts as you have time and money. There is an endless list you can do to one of them.

The Remington 597 - accurate, reliable, has a big rifle feel to it.

I have a Ruger 10/22 LVT that is pretty fun.

The only .22 CZ has is their Kadet Kit which is for Pistols.

Why don't you go with something more exotic? How about an STG-44?

On a practical note, I think you're looking at either a Ruger 10/22 or a Marlin 795. You cannot go wrong with either because both are sweet rifles. I lean more towards the 795.

Ruger 10-22 with a Fedderson barrel. Here are some of my targets with a "a only Ruger 10-22 Parts rifle with $160 Fedderson barrel." Only 25 yards (my limit at home) but good enough for your shotgun shells. I did polish and home modify the Ruger parts.

CZ 512 - semiauto, takes the same magazines as the 452 and 455 bolts. Will cycle standard velocity and high velocity ammuntion. You can take it down all the way with zero tools. I love mine.

Stock rifle off the rack at 50 yards (scoped, off bags). Shooting SK Rifle Match 22LR. The squares are 1".

As mentioned, it's a little more expensive but you don't have to mod it to get it to shoot.

Have you considered building your own 10/22 from a Kidd receiver or 80%?

Guess what: CZ makes three .22 semiautos: a rifle, a carbine and a tacticool AR15 lookalike
