I picked up a RAR in 17hmr a few months ago and when I took it to the range for the first time to sight in the scope and test a few types of ammo I ended up having a few FTE issues.
Out of 30 rounds shot there were 2 FTE. Both times the bolt was tough to open and would not go back into battery with the existing round still in the chamber. The rounds had to be popped out with a tool that I had in my bag.
After picking up all of the casings and looking them over I noticed most of them had the head of the casing bulging up from the rim, some worse than others. 1 of them had a split case. The first picture is most of the casings from this range trip.
I hear nothing but great things about Ruger and their customer service so I called them up and they suggested I take it to my FFL so they could send it in and receive it when they sent it back since I couldn't guarantee I would be home to receive the package. I also sent in the 30 casings from my first range trip and am not sure how much info my FFL gave Ruger about the situation.
The rifle returned back at my FFL about 3-4 weeks later with an invoice that said "items repaired: chamber". They included 9 of the casings from 18 rounds test fired. There was some minor bulging, but not much. I wonder why they didn't send me all of the casings?
I got some free time this week and went back to the range and had the same results but without a split case. I paid attention to every round and had 3 FTE out of 32 rounds. 2 of the rounds were Hornady 17 gr V-max. 1 of them was CCI A17. No issues with the CCI TNT. They were all tough to open and the bolt would not close again after opened. I chose the most bulged case to take a picture of.
Obviously I am going to send it back to Ruger again. This time I will be more involved with the process.
My QUESTION is (finally) what is causing this? Is the head space off? Does anyone think that Ruger gave me a BS line about repairing the chamber?
