Want to know people's opinion on converting my AR15 using CCMG 22 conversion kit or just purchasing the M&P 15-22 or similar rifle? Pros and cons to both? Price difference is about $100 difference.

Dedicated .22LR rifle or convert AR15?

I chose to go with a dedicated .22 rifle rather than a conversion kit.
In the end I decided against using a more expensive gun to do the job of a less expensive gun, and to avoid unnecessary wear and tear on my AR. -
With the price of M&P 15-22's, kind of makes it a no brainer. If you are really pinching pennies, the conversion will be the cheaper option but I think for the extra $250 the M&P is worth it. With the conversion kits you have to be very mindful of your barrel twist. I've seen some poor accuracy with the standard 1:7 and 1:9 AR barrels with conversion kits.Comment

I'd prefer AR-22, but if a MP 15-22 is $299, that makes the entire gun cheaper than a CMMG AR-22 upper. I looked at the conversions and went AR-22 instead, but it is not cheap. Probably a couple hundred more than a 15-22. My lower was pretty cheap because it is a NFA Polymer (which I think is a good match for a AR-22, especially a light weight upper). I like the fact that the AR-22 shares mags with my SIG522 also.Comment

I just used a $150 CMMG conversion kit this last week, gun ran flawless and had surprisingly decent accuracy. 16" barrel, 1:9 twist. Put 100 rem golden bullets and 100 CCI minimags without a single problem.
After that I went to turners and ordered the $299 m&p 15-22 :PComment

Conversion kits are often problematic.
Another option is a dedicated .22 upper. Nordic Components has a good one that was recently on sale for $399 with free shipping.
But that's still more expensive than a M&P 15/22."Show me a young conservative and I'll show you a man without a heart. Show me an old liberal and I'll show you a man without a brain." - Sir Winston Churchill

Really, both options are fine depending on what your needs are.
If you REALLY plan to shoot 22lr out of an AR platform regularly, get the M&P. I dont, so I didn't. I did get a CMMG bolt and enjoy it very much when I choose to use it (not that often)
Ill be honest, if I am shooting 22lr, i usually am not looking for a tactical platform, I am using my 10/22 to see how far and accurate I can shoot it. The CMMG conversion bolt fits and works just fine in one of my $200 palmetto stainless freedom uppers.
There are not $299 MP15-22 options up here in northern cali that I am aware of, but even at $300 I would be more temped for a takedown 10/22. I invested maybe $110 in the CMMG bolt kit, and that would barely cover tax and transfer fee if I bought a $300 MP15-22 and had it shipped to a local FFL...
Local prices on the M&P in Sonoma county seem to be $399.99 +tax/dros. not worth it to me at that price, but I am sure they are fun guns.Comment

The 15-22 and AR-22 are rimfire rifles. The conversion kit is a add-on to your centerfire featureless rifle or "assault rifle" to shoot rimfire thorough the barrel which is rifled for .223. Something worth noting. The Sig522, AR-22, MP 15-22 can have whatever features are on it. Collapsable folding stocks, mag release button, pistol grip, flash hider, etc...Comment

My 15-22 was a little picky at first with ammo but after I swapped the extractor to a Volquartsen..... night and day difference. Fires bulk ammo like a champComment

I bought an upper, PTAC 16" Mid-length 5.56 NATO 1/7 Phosphate Slick Side Upper from palmetto for 149.99. lower parts kit and stock set w/buffer tube, spring and buffer from Karri's guns for 74.00. CMMG conversion with three mags from optics planet, 203.00. 80 percent lower which I milled for 45.00.
Charging handle, 10.00. After shipping, free shipping on some orders I have about 500.00. I can use the conversion on different guns and I can always convert my 22 back to 5.56 with fixed mag.I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.Comment

Don't buy conversion kit. Lead will clog your barrel or gas port at least
MP 15-22 if you don't care about looking.
Dedicated upper if you want good looking like I do.Comment
