Hey guys, I wanted to do a 22 takedown build, but I'm having trouble deciding which one to do. I would do them all, but I know once I find my favorite one I'm going to not use the other ones, and I didn't want to spend the money to find out.
I originally wanted to get a 10/22 Takedown scout rifle, with the Amega barrel-mounted rail, a NDS-25 rear sight and the corresponding front sight. This is appealing to me because the scope being on the barrel is better aligned with pressure on the barrel, especially since the barrel is not free floating, and doesn't lose zero as easily when being taken down and put together. It also allows for irons and scope to be attached at the same time, meaning accessing the irons is as easy as removing the scope (I usually use clamp-down scope rings so it's fast).
However, I also wanted a target barrel, which is pretty much my other option since it's incompatible with the scout rail. I was going to get the target barrel 10/22 takedown, put an NDS-23 front sight and use the rail-mounted rear Tech Sights (when I wasn't using a scope), and (since the takedown target comes with a sling swivel and no barrel band) put a bipod on it.
Of course, both these options involve Volquartsen extractors and bolt releases, and a KIDD trigger.
The third option I was looking at is kind of weird. It's a Marlin Papoose with the RPP keymod handguard. The entire system is free-floated, and I actually like the simpler mechanics of the Papoose takedown system, simply because it seems like it'd be more consistent (I've heard a lot of 10/22 TDs being lemons). With the keymod handguard the problem with the awkward hand placement goes away, and it's nice to have a huge choice of options as accessories. The only bad things about the Papoose really is the crappy dovetail scope mount on the receiver and the lack of high quality aftermarket extractors (though with dual extractors it needs it a lot less than the stock 10/22 does). I'd drop in a DIP adjustable trigger and a rail conversion kit.
My use case is mainly plinking, but I also want to do Appleseeds with this rifle and maybe occasionally go rabbit hunting with it. I'm actually leaning towards the Papoose right now. I have a 10/22 Carbine since people really talked up the 10/22, but was disappointed with a bad stock extractor and some issues with build quality. Recently the rail-mounting threads became stripped, even though I only change out rails once every few months. I guess I was supposed to apply thread locking compound every now and then? I've also been put out by the horror stories of dud 10/22 TDs. But I'd love to hear some feedback on what you guys think is best for me.
