    .22 ammo malfunction

Today I was shooting Remington golden bullets. 3 times out of 150 rounds the rim of the casing was blown off. The remainder of the casing stuck in the cylinder. The bullet did fire . What 's going on? Is this just an ammo quality issue? No other problems with the gun.Heritage revolver.

Yes, it is definitely an ammo quality issue. This failure mode with rem gb's has been reported frequently.

This. I've had it happen in my semi auto 22 rifles using gold bullets more than once.

Try a few different brands and check back.

I have not had that problem in my Single Ten with GBs, but avoid them because they are dirty rounds.

I got snagged in the leg a couple years' back by a small piece of jagged brass while standing to the rear of a group who were all firing various Ruger .22 pistols, and all were feeding from the same bucket of bullets. It stuck in my calf, and I pulled it out, wondering wtf? Nobody seemed to have any particular issues, and I didn't say anything. Now, what am I to do with all of these GBs that I ended up with during the shortage?

I've had case rupture with Golden Bullets, but 3 in 150 is excessive. It could be a bad lot, but I would diagnose the gun to be safe.

How much end shake does the cylinder have? Is it enough to get really close or rub the forcing cone? If so, then it could be introducing excessive headspace, hence enough unsupported case to contribute to case rupture. I'm not familiar with the Heritage revolver, and whether there are shims available to correct the issue if it exists.

It may likely be the ammo, but it's worth doing a safety check, especially if you're planning on shooting high or hyper velocity rounds.

Also, I'm assuming that you're not firing 22 LR in a 22 mag cylinder, since I believe minimum (SAAMI) headspace for 22 mag is 0.050" vs 0.043" for 22 LR.

Golden Bullets turned my Ruger Mark II into a jam-o-matic last weekend. The Buckmark on the other hand ate them all...

Thanks for the heads up on the GB's. My Buckmark and 10/22 have not had any issues with them, but will pay closer attention as I have been building a pretty large stash of these.

Just to be safe, I would also have the revolver safety checked.

I kind of surprised that Remington does this, but there are actually two types of 22LR "Golden Bullets". The 100 pack plastic box has 40 grain round nose, versus the bulk pack have 36 grain hollow points.

I've had great reliability with the 40g RN in semi-autos. Not as much with the 36g HPs.

In my opinion the "shortage" of 22LR was self inflicted by people panic buying and hoarding. Which then encouraged flipping for profit and drove supply down farther. Unless Obama had the gov buy up a ton of ammo just to f us.

The Golden Bullets I have seem to have higher pressure than my other 22LR ammo, but I have never had a blow-out. My S&W 22A has a deeper ridge/chamfer on the chamber, and the Golden Bullets case rim expands to fill the void. Non of my other ammo does that.

Yeah the coating on the golden turned my Ruger into one too, it's so far one of the only two kinds that my ruger hates out of all the ones I've tried, the other one being the winchster super x bulk pack with the gray packaging.

I have a box of Remington Golden Bullets that I have no use for. It is the ONLY ammo that malfunctions in my Marlin 22 rifle. It also malfunctioned in my Ruger 22 auto pistol that NEVER malfunctions with anything else.
Maybe Remington contracts the manufacture to other manufactures & doesn't actually make the ammo.
I had similar problems with the "UMC" pistol ammo. I tried some in a Glock 17 & 21. Both have several thousand rounds without a malfunction but wouldn't eject UMC. Probably inconsistent loads. They would be OK in a manually-operated firearm.

The Remington Golden Bullets choke my Savage semi auto rifle. It will happily feed almost anything else, but the GBs produce constant jams and stovepipes.
