Help with Ruger 10/22 in NorCal

Any of you NorCal guys really good with 10/22's?

My nephew who has terminal cancer just bought a brand new carbine as part of his bucket list and I'd like to really smooth out the heavy stock trigger for him. I have a Volquartsen Target Hammer and Extractor to install and would like to also do the Bolt Release modification to the stock release.

I can come to you to make things less of a hassle - I live in Sonoma County and would be willing to travel a couple of hours.. Would like to get this done ASAP as he just had a bone biopsy and the results were not good. Any further life saving procedures have been canceled and they are in the process of getting him on to Hospice care.

    Thanks - Dave

What do you need? I'm a complete noob but I did manage the volquartsen target hammer, extractor and bolt release on my own with YouTube videos, basic tools and a kitchen table.

They seem to be fairly basic mods that produce a much better trigger, any chance he could help? I'm sure that would be a real accomplishment that he could be proud of!

All the best for him, will be getting my prayers!

I'm sure I/we could probably install the hammer and extractor and I've got a Dremel so could do the Bolt Release too. De-burring/Polishing the action parts is something I've never done and just don't want to chance screwing it up and dealing with downtime waiting for replacement parts.

Realizing that time is of the essence, all of the mods you are conducting are available on youtube and very easy to complete. You'll need a stone for the trigger polish.

Seriously you could knock it all in an hour or two just by watching, If I was closer or had seen this over the long holiday I'd be heading your way.

Well, my Sister had to have him admitted to the hospital yesterday so I stripped the rifle down & cleaned it thoroughly. Did the bolt mod, installed the Volquartsen Target Hammer and Extractor, and a 3x9 Hawke scope. Trigger pull seems to have dropped from 7-8lbs to around 3lbs. Didn't attempt any action work as I didn't want him coming home to find I had screwed it up.

This is the best video I've found for the target hammer kit and bolt release. He makes it very easy: https://youtu.be/OLrqrQ1-ta0

Here's his video for the extractor: https://youtu.be/fvn7rFwj4H4

I am sorry that your nephew has terminal cancer, Warthog. I dont have the expertise to do what he wants, but I am sure many others here do.

Sorry to hear of your nephew's condition, OP. I have a nephew and also on my wife's side, that we lost to cancer both at 17 years of age.

You might want to call Paul the gunsmith, at " 29 Outdoor Gear " in American Canyon. They are open even on Sundays. He comes highly recommended and I can vouch for his work and fees.

                Lots of luck.

OP, message me if you still need help with this. I just saw the thread now, my apologies. But I have a rifle I built for my wife, with all Volquartsen parts. You are welcome to borrow any of the parts, or the whole trigger/bolt assembly just to get the rifle together for him to shoot if you'd like to save yourself time and running around looking for parts. Message me if you need anything, best wishes with your nephew and family sir.

Thanks everyone for the kind words and suggestions. He is pleased with the improvement that the work I did made. I put a Hawke 3-9 Mil Dot scope on and he really likes it. Unfortunately, I have not been able to get him out shooting as he cannot tolerate driving/riding in a vehicle more than about 15 minutes due to the pain it causes him. I have told him I will drop what I'm doing and take him should he feel up to it.

Have you considered a medium power air rifle? Could set up a range in a hallway....

If you can't take him to the range, bring the range to him. It might not be the same as a 10/22. But you can have a lot of fun plinking a short range. And just spending quality time with him. There's some nice air rifle out there...

Don't wait till he can go... This week I am missing my Mom; lost her to cancer this week of last year. When it gets bad, it can happen so fast.

Contact me and I will arrange for him to shoot his 10/22 at the Sebastopol Rifle and Pistol Club.
