Good cheap plinking rifle

What's a good plinking rifle for cheap? I'm looking into 22s since ammo is cheap.

Ruger 10/22 $260

Is the Mossberg basically a Honda Civic with a Ferrari body kit? I've read reviews where it got trashed but saw videos that spoke positively about it.

The Savage good for the price? Or spend a little more and get the Ruger.
$300 tops is my budget. Would a pistol be better? I've seen those 22 revolvers with a long barrel so they should be fun for plinking too. What I disliked about them is that you insert a round one at a time and removing a used cartridge is also removed one by one. Kinda annoying. But it not too bad I guess.

Marlin 795 - you can buy the upgraded one I have in the Marketplace for 10/22 money and have better accuracy.

Seriously though, the 10/22 is great if you just want to screw around with a .22.

But you can do better than $260 for a basic 10/22.
Edit: OK I see stainless for the extra money.

Henry lever runs around $300 for the basic H001.

Talking bolt guns, there was also a guy selling a CZ455 for a little over $300 I think. That's a seriously accurate 22 for the price - clovered groups at 50yds.

I also do the M&P 15-22 for a fun plinker and for my kid to shoot. I don't recommend the 10/22. They're pretty finicky with what ammo they like.

I love my cheap old Remington 550-1 semi auto 22. It has an original weaver scope and it is very reliable and fires every kind off ammo I feed it.

I prefer the Marlin over Ruger. 10/22 are picky with ammo.

Ive got a metric ton of old 22 long and my tube feds eat it all. My Ruger only wants clean, fresh, High Velocity ammo

If you don't mind bolt action look at Ruger American Rifle. You should be able to get one right around $300. They use the same magazines as the 10/22. When you save up a bit more get a Simmons 3X9 22 Magnum scope for $50 and you will be shooting out the center ring out to the limits of the cartridge.

Not speaking for the model in general, just my individual experience one specific rifle: I have a Ruger 10/22 that's about 25 years old.

Functional reliabity has been very close 100% WITH THE FACTORY MAGAZINE (10 shot rotary).

Reliability has been awful with various aftermarket magazines e.g. Butler Creek.

Accuracy is approx 2MOA. Trigger on the heavy side but crisp clean break.

Marlin 795 is super sweet. Get some Tech-Sight peep sights for it and you're good to go with a very capable shooter. And still probably cheaper than a 10/22.
